Is there any list of exchanges that are planned to be upgraded to broadband or are there any at all planned this year. Getting a little tired of being kept in the dark ages.

eircom have not yet completed their upgrade program from March 2007 and 15 exchanges from that upgrade program are yet to get the basic ADSL1 type services promised by eircom. This is the only list there is for new enablements.

Once they eventually complete these exchanges ( and it has been well over a year since any of them were belatedly dealt with) I'm sure they will have a look at the 250 odd exchanges that do not have ADSL and were never in any upgrade program.

Almost 6 years into the 2007 Upgrade Program these incomplete exchanges are as follows:

    Connacht

    Roscommon:

    Ballyforan

    Leitrim:

    Carrigallen

    Cloone

    Sligo

    Sligo is complete.

    Galway

    Kilrickle

    Mayo

    Mayo is complete.

    Abandoned Connacht = 4

    ULSTER

    Donegal

    St. Johnston

    Monaghan

    Annyalla

    Cavan

    Cavan is complete

    Abandoned Ulster = 2

    MUNSTER

    Cork

    Ballydesmond

    Knocknagree

    Knockraha

    Kerry

    Kerry is complete

    Waterford

    Ballymacarbry

    Tipperary

    Ballyporeen

    Limerick

    Bruree

    Abandoned Munster = 6

    Leinster

    Westmeath

    Westmeath is complete

    Longford

    Longford is complete

    Louth

    Louth is complete

    Meath

    Meath is complete

    Offaly

    Offaly is complete

    Laois

    Laois is complete

    Kilkenny

    Oldtown

    Coon

    Dublin

    Dublin is complete

    Kildare

    Calverstown

    Wicklow

    Wicklow is complete

    Wexford

    Wexford is complete

    Abandoned Leinster = 3

    Abandoned Nationwide = 15

That's unfortunate. I wonder has the Competition Authority ever been involved in this? It would seem a blatant abuse of a dominant position to withhold access to a market area from competitors until you are prepared to operate there yourself.

I have asked this question on multiple occasions over the last few years.

1 There is no list of Exchanges that are due to be broadband enabled because the broadband rollout program has been shut down by Eircom.

2 There is no point in asking such a question on this forum. Although oestensively the Eircom reps are here to answer questions put to them, in actuality they are not allowed to tell the truth about this. They are not allowed to tell you that Eircom has abandoned the rollout of fixed line broadband in Ireland. The verbal contortions that the reps go through to "answer without answering" questions on this issue can be seen as either amusing, embarrassing or insulting.

3 Over 270 Exchanges were never broadband enabled and never will be until political pressure forces the govt to move against Eircom and take control of these Exchanges off them.

4 In 2007 Eircom promised to broadband enable named Exchanges and to roll out fixed line broadband in the five major urban areas (infamous "Take all orders" promise) A few years ago the website that was set up to provide information on the progress of this roll out was shut down. Reps are not allowed to admit or apologise for the breaking of these promises.

This is a crucial and very important point. Eircom owns and controls the Exchanges that it is refusing to enable. Some of these Exchanges particularly those in the cities could be economically viable. It could also be argued that Eircoms refusal to provide fixed line broadband in so many areas is hurting us competitively and is not in the public interest. Why not compulsorily acquire at least some of the non enabled Exchanges and then fund someone like Vodafone to enable them and let them have the profits that would follow.
