Keogh's Shamrock and Onion and O'Donnell's Salt and Vinegar!

I reckon both are produced at the Tayto factory though!?

I don't know about O'Donnell's, but Keogh's are made on their farm in North County Dublin.

Fairly sure O'Donnells are produced on their farm in Tipperary

On the bag in front of me: 'Produced by Largo Foods Co. Meath on behalf of O'Donnell's Crisps, Seskin Farm, Kilsheelan, Clonmel'

I believe Largo are the folks who produce Tayto and Hunky Dory.

Correct! That's what I was on about..
O'Donnell's produce the spuds and source the flavourings, but they are processed by Tayto (or Largo).

I think the same applies to Keogh's!?

Keogh's are hand fried on the farm, unless they've recently changed. I've definitely heard them interviewed about it and I think it says so on the pack. They converted an outbuilding on the farm into a "Crisping Room". I haven't read a pack in a while but they used to stamp the name of the worker who made each batch on the packet.

O'Donnell's cheese and onion are the best crisps in the world. Ever. Fact! They are my food obsession, I could sit down and eat an entire box in one sitting I reckon. Not a fan of the S&V, they taste like regular S&V to me, nothing spectacular. But the flavour off the C&O is just incredible.

Keoghs are ok, but not a patch on O'Donnells. I find them too hard and is it them that has a sort of parsley or something green on them that ends up getting everywhere?

I must try one flavor of each. I'm a fan of the Tayto bistro crisps, and I imagine they'll be similar.

Ah, I see it on the website now. Cheers for pointing that out.
Always preferred O'Donnell's but would be inclined towards supporting Keogh's if they do the groundwork themselves!

Also, I prefer the thicker crisp I have to say

Yeah, I'm kinda over O'Donnell's now that I know they are just mass-produced. My own fault as the info was there all the time :P

    Keogh's ftw :P

True, but the shpiel on the pack is a bit misleading to be fair.

Also, Just realized yesterday while munching away that they contain yeast extract (AKA MSG) - Devestated! :(

    How does their S&V compare?

I like them, but I LOVE Bill and Mick's s&v. Genuinely my favourite :)

I see another thread on here about them, must investigate. (EDIT: Your thread I see! :o)

As long as they pack a good kick of vinegar!

Both are great, Keogh's the better, but San Carlo the best so far

Just picked up some O'Donnells sweet chilli.

    Impressive.

Just need to find Keoghs and then I can make a decision on which is better.

I am genuinely addicted to Keogh's Cheese & Onion, my god they are amazing.

Keogh's without a doubt- love their Salt & Irish Cider Vinegar ones. O'Donnells are just like Tayto-their not bad but their not as good quality as Keogh's.It even says made by Largo foods on their bag! I think O'Donnells is just a brand. Keogh's are growing the spuds and cooking them themselves.

In fairness to O'Donnell's, while it's disappointing they don't fry their own, they do grow the spuds and source the flavourings locally (Con Trass' Apple Cider Vinegar for instance).

Even though I'm inclined to support the boys who do more of the legwork, you just can't beat O'Donnell's S&V..

Didn't like Keogh's Shamrock and Sour Cream, but have S&V in the cupboard and will try tonight.. D-DAY!

Ah HERE, Keogh's use Yeast Extract as well!

Can foods containing these taste enhancers really be considered 'gourmet'?

It doesn't bother me to be honest. MSG is tasty stuff.

I'm probably going way off topic now, but...

I wouldn't say it's any worse than salt.

    Here's a decent thread on it: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=81739464

Keoghs packs say free from msg though?

Without having a packet in front of me to check, some manufacturers use yeast extract instead of MSG. Yeast Extract contains natural MSG and is often used to get around listing MSG/E621 on packets.
