Does anyone know if there's much of a difference between the cost of insuring an occupied house (with contents) and a vacant house (undergoing construction)?

I cant comment on the actual price difference but you may need to go directly to an insurance company to get a quote for that. Most of the off the peg quotes online wont cover homes under construction and or empty properties, as you can imagine the risks posed are a lot greater then a home with full time residents.

most insurance companies wont cover a vacant unoccupied (unoccupied for 30 days in a row would be the standard deffinition but some state the house must be furnished) property. you may be able to get fire and storm damage but that would be the most you will get.
