Folders locked/inaccessalble

Hi, Im using Windows 7 Ultimate and when I checked today the my Documents folder and Recycle bin had a lock symbol on them and when I double clicked them I got a Access denied error. I suspect a virus or some other malady has done it but would appreciate any help. TIA John
