dad passed away how do i find out about pensions

    hi my father passed away he had been unemployed for 20 years but before that hed had a few jobs but iv no idea how to go about finding out if he had payed into any pension plans im currently unemployed and could really do with find out as it might help towards the cost but iv really no idea where to start

    write to the HR dept of the companies he worked with to ask. You should give them as much details as you can, such as PPS no and employee no along with dates he worked there.

    If they were large companies, there MIGHT be a pension scheme, but if they were local smaller companies, chances are that there was no scheme.

    Be aware also that he might have been refunded any contributions on leaving the companies, especially if he was there under two years.

    Also be aware, that any monies that might be repaid, will be to the estate of your late father and not to you!

    If he was in a defined contribution scheme then he may have some money somewhere and you can claim that on behalf of his estate but if he was in a defined benefit scheme, the pension entitlement dies with him, unless he left a widow in which case she may be able to claim a spousal pension from the scheme.
