    Hi all

I hear all the time about how very successful entrepreneurs started from nothing! I even heard lots that most of them started there first business simply because they had no qualifications to get a job and had to go do something on their own!

I have searches the web for good ideas to start off with but still none the wiser! I would really love to make money from a website or some form of online business. I just don't know what yet and would like to hear from people that can give me advice.

I'm lost and really don't wanna work for anyone again, it's always been in my head that one day I will be my own boss. Does this mean anything or does everyone think this ??

    Help and advice much appreciated!

Well, one of the first questions you should be asking yourself is what skills/knowledge do you have that you can capitalise on?

Why are people constantly searching for ideas. Come up with your own ffs!

Or because they spotted an opportunity/market and decided to do something about it.

Do you really expect others to generate your ideas for you and to give you their ideas which will be successful?

The vast majority of people are not entrepreneurial and therefor work for others. I would examine the reasons that you don't want to work for anyone else and then put your thinking cap on. From the Gist of you post I am surmising you have no qualifications and have never managed a business and also that you have very little to invest in a business.

You'll never be handed an idea on a plate unless your extremely lucky.

Ideas mostly come out of passions, and hobbies. Things that you are interested in already.
So take up as many new things as possible in your spare time. If your entrepreneurial minded you will see various potential businesses inside these different hobbies after a while something you take up that will probably lead you to start something. I remember a few weeks after taking up poker I wanted to open a casino! :D

Greenbaize, if you don't have ideas of your own, I would say you are snookered as a entrepreneur.

See whats out there at the moment. Lots of new websites like groupon are popping up.

Also loads more room for another classifieds website I think

hmm thats true. But I think there is. Onandgone.ie are up and going but nothing compared to what they should be. Let's not mention the stealing of other ads but they are there. One thing donedeal is lacking is a good car search engine. They don't have one on purpose so that there car ads get more views.

Done deal have the classified car market wrapped up because it works, Carzone have the dealer market wrapped up because it works.

I can't believe you think donedeals car market is wrapped up.. It's terribly layed out and messy.

I admit it's not well laid out but for cheap cars from private sellers its the place to go. Nowhere comes near to it.

onandgone.ie has a shocking layout and colour scheme in my opinion. There are so many of these classified websites coming and going most fail within 12 months.

It works. It sells cars fast, and generates massive revenue for them. It's a bargain basement type site and that's why people use it!

Oh yea onandgone's colour is awful. Agreed it sells cars fast, and generates massive revenue for them. But by god you look for a very particular car and it will show you a bicycle (exaggerating :P ) but you know what I mean.

That happens on purpose for a few reasons:

    More search indexing.
    More page views.
    It reads keywords.

Exactly. It happens for a reason. So it does not work properly or it would not be pulling up random stuff. That's only my opinion anyways. You've some valid points to.

But I told you they do it on purpose, so it does work properly. The same way ebay does it too.

They started with a lot of very hard work and long hours (far more than an employee would have to endure), with no guarantee of success - indeed the odds are against it.

No such thing as a free lunch.

As a person who is self employed, its best to point out when a person works for themselves instead of having one boss they have loads, your bank manager becomes a boss, the tax man, your landlord, and the worst boss of all your employees. If the only reason you want to be self employed is so no one can boss you around think again.

You seem very naieve indeed if you think you will cobble together some website or other and then ?????? Profit!
Plus the market is flooded with mediocre classified websites. Nobody with sense would invest money in another ads website unless it offered something that was seriously better than the competition. Even then you're starting with ZERO market share so that's a big killer - who's going to log onto a ads website with only a few hundred ads and probably nothing that they are looking for.

Are you able to design and get a website up and running or will you have to get someone in to do it?

Just by the vague gist of your OP i'm feeling that you are not really up to much at the current rate.

IF you have to come onto websites like this looking for people to donate ideas and hold your hand you probably aren't entrepreneur material.
Do you think the likes of Sean Quinn or Bill Cullen were looking to bum ideas off people and have their hand held when they were starting out. No, the knew exactly what they were at, were driven and butchered their way through the marketplace to get to the top.
    Are you that person?

Educate yourself OP. If you want to run a site for example, learn how to be a successful webmaster. Don't wait for inspiration, get busy now.

Also, as others have said, being self employed is not all it's cracked up to be. I've been self employed for more than a decade and very often it's more hassle than its worth.

The only two questions that really matter are:

-Are you going to enjoy what you do working for yourself?

-Are you going to make the kind of living that you will happy with?

    Everything else is secondary.

Watch some futuristic shows, look at what they are using (equipment) that we are still using today, it would seem they have not come up with an alternative, it just might get your brain cells flowing, that is all.

Self employed does not mean entrepreneur, if you are having all of the above problems, that is all.
