Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. To be honest I got the free trial but ended it when it was finished, I wasn't that impressed with their selection. BUt that is just my personal opinion.

On their site, Browse Selection, TV, it only shows 18 TV series. If there are more I would like to browse them, to see what they have, but 18 is all that shows. So maybe you can understand my comment earlier.

Where are you people getting 18? There are around 412:

Imo...NO!, at least the pathetic irish version!....the movie lineup is woeful, no big titles or recent ones.

The tv section has nothing recent either...the service *needs* access the US shows the next day after airing in the US!

I did try the free month, very little of interest or worth....not worth 7 quid a month imo.

Netflix is not about getting in big new titles. It never has and never will be. It's purpose is to give the subscriber an extensive catalogue of films with the emphasis on older releases. The newer stuff they get in is generally TV shows and a few select films.

People moan about how they need new releases and TV as soon as it airs in the US but that would see the cost rise to maybe 50 euro a month. 7 euro a month is a bargain, seriously. You get access to thousands of films and TV shows and a catalogue that's ever growing. my parents bought a smart TV with the intention of cancelling Sky and using Netflix and the Internet to access the stuff they want to watch and when they rang Sky they were offered a pretty good deal on the full package with no contract so they decided to take it and try it out. When I was home last I was surprised by how crap it was in comparison to Netflix. Sure they have some pretty big recent releases but they show the same stuff every day and the on demand is very, very poor. I would take take the 7 euro a month Netflix over it any day of the week.

I signed into the Irish store and a hell of a lot more than 18 shows are showing under TV. A hell of a lot.

As you know from your previous posts a lot of the people on here have zero grasp of economics, because they expect to get everything free through illegal downloading they can't understand that legitimate businesses have to pay a fortune to acquire content, to have most of what they want would mean as you say a 50 euro a month fee, for 7 Netflix is doing an amazing job.

OK, I get that now. I wouldn't sign up without knowing what I'm getting, and it only shows a few on their web page. Am browsing the full list now for shows/films I might be interested in

    Two and a half men
    Big Bang Theory

    Take the money and run

    Manhattan

    Annie Hall

    Love and death

    The walking dead

Not having much success. Maybe it's just my unpopular interests.

The user interface on Netflix is shiite, I use the various third party ones like this, as you can see there are 18 pages of tv shows with 23 shows listed on the first page alone:

Netflix is well worth the money, tbh I'd pay more for it. I've the US version on my PS3 and IPad Mini, and the Irish version through my laptop.

It's easy to note what you should be pirating every week but I find it difficult to discover new gems this way.
I use this forum for that :D

Seriously, Richard Dower starts a new thread for every series on every station from here to North Korean State TV.

His thread about Kim-jong Un's Fun Family Happy Joy Hour was my starting point, and I haven't looked back since. Their best work is most definitely How To Blow Up America - Ten Ways Weekly.

The US version is good but the Ireland one isn't. I had it for two months and gave up on it. The idea of it is good but I find that it's not updated enough me. If it improves I would consider getting it back.

It's updated at the start of every month and then throughout the month they will add the odd thing. Sky movies adds about 5 new films a week and I've noticed that a lot of them are cheap, made for TV drama's that would be more at home on True Entertainment.

Had Standard Definition Sky movies for a month last year then cancelled, was about 4 films worth watching in that time for €30, I watch about 8 films and 3 tv shows a month for €7 most of them are HD, if you do the maths there is simply no comparison.

A packet of Fags is 9 quid or so.....

    Of course it's worth it.

The content for the price you're getting is nothing short of sensational imo - To stream in HD when you want, is something I've been waiting to do for so long.

I've Kids..... For 50 quid I bought a Roku streamer & put it in their room, cartoons & young girlie stuff keeps them so quiet when MY Football is on!! - Sure I'd pay 50 quid a month if Netflix asked!!

Honestly... it's the future & it has to be the best thing I've signed up to in a long time.

Sky is beyond a rip-off now, this is so ideal if you're on a tight budget.

    Hope that helps someone.

and replays them ad infinitum, least you can pick what you watch on Netflix.

I cancelled the sky, got freeview and Netflix and love it. It's beyond belief about no discussion of the region blocking as even Netflix probably relies on this for more customers. Is an extension in the chrome store illegal also? Find it OTT but I suppose boards has to mind their back from Sherlock :-)

Anyway, well worth it. Sometimes I can find the same documentaries on YouTube but even when I get a lot of buffering on YT, Netflix plays perfect. They must have some server!

Forgot to mention I love the fact I can watch it anywhere - on the phone, on the laptop or even just log into it on the library computers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,401 ✭✭✭shortys94

Love it, have always watched it in the states and so glad it is here, have the US version and my family have also adopted netflix now, they never turn on the satellite receiver or terrestrial channels anymore.

Also house of cards is another reason which adds to the value of it.

I feel like Netflix is the only option which does not take advantage of customers in europe, it did not raise prices significantly from their US market which I find nice, as opposed to Sky who seem to constantly increase the price of their product in relation to the UK prices.

Will have to start watching this show as it has been mentioned a few times.

My young fella (5) refused to watch sky anymore (Boomerang, CN, etc) as the ads were annoying him so much and I got sick of being called every 10mins and asked to fast forward even the live tv :) Netflix is just brilliant for kids. I really don't know what the future of TV is going to be, will probably evolve with smart tv apps, but I can't see the generation growing up now watching conventional tv anymore anyway with ad breaks every 10mins.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 176 ✭✭pinkbear

In 6 months, between the family we've watched:
all of House of Cards, Breaking Bad, Modern Family, Melissa & Joey, iCarly, Gavin & Stacey, Dr. Who, Ned's Declassified, How I Met your Mother,
    and about 20 films.

I'd say 300 hours viewing, for €40. At 10c/hour, I have to say, it's amazing value. And best of all, there's no ads.

Netflix for Ireland is like that side street Video rental store from the 90`s with all the B movies and crap but without the half decent Porn section

Best to avoid until they realize that trash and p1ss poor content will not do for the Irish market

    I love my Netflix.

€7 quid a month is nothing really. Its pretty much just one below par chicken curry from your local Asian themed restraunt.

I can watch all of the Netflix content on my mobile, HTPC, laptop, my girlfriends smart tv and on her mobile.

Its easy to navigate and tons of content in a higher defination than the ordinary bloke on the street would expect.

    Happy days!

waste of time and money, most of the content you want is available free, youtube are getting involved now with their version, eventually the film industry will just have to realise that the only money they will make will be from product placement

Product placement isn't for cheapskates who never buy anything.

How great it'll be though when we have our media full of ads, if only Gone With The Wind had big posters of Marlboro and whiskey then ordinary people could have saved tons of money.

Or is there a place with good up to date listings?

The irish version most definitely isn't worth while, you'll watch all the good stuff over the course of the initial free trial, however, having seen the US version it's most definitely worth the €7, and the great thing is - cancelling the service couldn't be easier.

It's better for tv shows but there are a few good movies. Best thing to do is have a look through it yourself and decide whether it has a good enough selection to hold your interest. This site combined with unblock us makes it worth the €7 (+ $5 for unblock us).

TBH though for films you're probably better off with lovefilm or one of the many newcomers. Netflix is by far the best for TV though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,305 ✭✭✭April O Neill

You mean that it was on in the US during the summer, it still hasn't aired on TV here. Sure you can download the episode but with Netflix's Super HD you really cannot get a version as nice looking.

Yup and Breaking Bad is one programme that deserves to be watched in high definition - the cinemotography is gorgeous. I refuse to watch a crappy free version.

I don't know what I'm reading here about free versions being poor quality in relation to superior Netflix.
All episodes are available in 720p and films in 1080p so I don't think that comparison stands.

On another point with FTA, Saorview and Netflix you'd pretty much have all the entertainment you'd need for €7 a month.

Stupid question, but is there even a way to properly browse their selection?

    I found this page

    Your link doesn't work.

Netflix has a search box on the top right of the page (when viewing the website). Type into that and you get a list. As for browsing, there are categories at the top of the page and arrows right and left to browse.

It's not TV you know. They don't have listings. Seems fairly straightforward.

Thanks. That answered my question. Based on what you're saying I guess you have to register before they'll let you use their search dialogue boxes. Kinda defeats the point in my particular case.

For 7 euro a month Netflix is a bargain and the kind of people who will tell you that its all free online are generally the same tossers who will mean about how "cinema and TV has gotten really crap".

No. Sure going to the cinema is all about the experience and eating popcorn, looking at the big screen, surround sound and sitting in a room with others.

You can download anything you find on Netflix in ordinary quality or HD quality if you want elsewhere. Just because you download or stream online doesn't mean you don't go to the cinema or think its crap. It's a different thing I think.

I wouldn't be too fussed about watching something in great HD anyway. As long as its decent enough watchable, maybe DVD quality then all is good. And sure I may indulge myself the odd time and download something that's great unreal HD or Bluray quality.

Netflix quality is decent and the resume feature is good. The Irish content is quite poor though, the US one, is better. But even the US one doesn't have a the latest movies. Lots of kids stuff though. But it is cheap, so trying it for a month or two isn't much to see if you like it. Big flaw for me is the parental controls. its too hard to flick between kids only setting and everything else.

If your a big movies fan and near an extravision maybe their new 20 a month might be better.

And how is doing this supporting the creation of new content? Netflix is increasingly bringing quality programming and giving other projects a much needed boost. Easy to find new shows too, because of Netflix I've found what are now some of my favourite shows.

Ah I know it doesn't support new content. But from a purely selfish and money saving point of view I wouldn't bother when the equivalent and more can be found for free in similar quality elsewhere.

You probably have a point about finding out about shows. But i can use google and this forum to find out about those.
