Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Does anyone know if there is a way to insure your camera gear for a short period of time for not huge money? When I looked into insuring my gear it seemed incredibly expensive and I never did it. I have a Canon 600d, 24-205 F4 L, a 50mm f1.8 and now I just got a 70-200mm F4 L also. I'm going on holidays for 2 weeks next week, and then I'm away with work for another two weeks.

Can anyone suggest what might be the best way for me to get this stuff insured?
    Thanks.

Zascar, the only way to do this is by adding it to your household or contents policy. You need to specify them and make sure they are covered to your destination of travel.

The policies we offer are only annual ones.

Ok thanks, I was thinking that might be the case. I don't have insurance in my apartment as I rent, but I might be able to get it on my parents policy. Do I need an official appraisal/valuation for this does anyone know? And if so, where would I be able to get this done?
    Thanks

Look at a contents only policy covering your belongings in a rented property. They normally have a minimum sum insured of €15k on these. You will then have to specify your camera equipment under all risks as they will not be covered under the general contents sums insured. unfortunately you cannot take out an all risks policy in isolation.

All you need to cover them for is the replacement sum insured and keep serial numbers.

You can call your parents home insurers but you are best advising them that you do not leave full time at the house and just stay there at weekends and the odd occasion. In the event of a claim if you have them covered under their policy and it comes to light you are not resident there they could turn down the claim. Best to be upfront with them and get it in writing.

Thanks Balfey, I actually called 213.ie re contents insurance including my camera gear all specified, covered outside the home and for accidental damage, and got a quote of €182 which is not bad.

I'm going to do what you said re my parents policy and see what that comes to, but either way I think I'll do it. I've had camera gear nicked before don't want to be left uncovered again!

They Specialise in gadgets. It is more expensive due to the claim frequency and costs. The rate works out about €10 per €100 which is alot more expensive than getting your camera gear covered on a stand alone policy or on your household policy. Rates between insurers range from €1.50 to €5.00 per €100 this way.

Good cover to have if you have an ipad or iphone or similar though. Can be cheaper than having the cover with your mobile phone provider.

my think was to get the whole lot covered with them
and they let you put a few gadgets on the one policy

For sure if the total of everything you have is €2000 or under it would be a good option.

I ended up getting home contents insurance frmo 123.ie via RSA for €180 which included 10k's worth of home contents insurance and also all my camera gear which was named, inside and outside the home, on holidays, and covered for accidental damage also.
