If I'm in the UK and want to call an Irish number from my Irish mobile do I dial as normal or have I to use a code?

You need to add +353 and remove the 0.

So ... to cal 0871234567 you dial +353871234567

LoCall numbers usually have an alternative number to call from outside the country

    E.g. Liberty's contact details: http://www.libertyinsurance.ie/company/contact.html

Even when you're in Ireland you need to avoid using 1890 xxxxx numbers because you will be billed for all such calls and none of them will come out of your monthly call allowance if you have one.

If your insurance company has a number to call when out of Ireland, use that every time, inside or outside Ireland. For example, Liberty (linked to above) has a number 00353 4943 24000 on their website to call when outside of Ireland. Store that number as +353 4943 24000 in your phone and use that every time, everywhere. The double zero prefix will work in most countries, the plus sign will work in all countries.

If they don't publish such a number, get the number of their main switchboard, call them and ask to be connected to their call centre. I refuse to use 1890 numbers.

And store all numbers in your phone as +353 xxx xxx, that way you can call the person no matter where you are. Drop the initial zero and prefix it with +353
