Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

High blood pressure in pregnancy

    Hi,

I am wondering is anyone else out there suffering from hypertenion in pregnancy and what they are doing about it.
I am 41 and this is my 4th pregnancy. I suffered from hypertension in my 2nd and 3rd pregnancies but it only started around the 6 month mark and never needed to take anything. This time round it has started about 10 weeks in. I am now 12 weeks and suffering constant headaches and blood pressure is averaging in the 140s over 90s and GP wants me to go on medication called Trandate to reduce it but I am really worried about the effects this might have on the baby.

Anyone suffering similarly or had a similar experience in the past?

High bp in pregnancy is a serious complication so I would have a good chat with your GP and get started on the medication.

    Hi Sarah3

Sorry to hear about your blood pressure problems. I too also had blood pressure problems in pregnancy and after pregnancy.

I was kept in during pregnancy due to my blood pressure I was giving quite a high dose of Trandate (Labetalol) and it did no harm to me or the baby.
It is better for your baby and you to have the blood prpressure under control.

Although it's quite early to have Blood Pressure problems if you had them in previous pregnancys it might be worth getting your blood pressure checked regularly after pregnancy to make sure it isn't always a problem whether you are pregnant or not.

I suffered from the blood pressure after pregnancy also. It's three months and still on blood pressure tablets! I was induced early because of the blood pressure but I just wanted to let you know that I have a healthy little boy!

Some tips to reduce the blood pressure as well as the tablets are reducing your intake of salt.No popcorn, crisps, bacon, or take outs! As all have a high content of salt. A 20 minute walk a day can reduced your blood pressure by 10 on top and 5 on the bottom! Strawberries are known to lower blood pressure too!

If you have anymore questions feel free to email me :). I'm an expert at this stage as I'm 3 months over the birth and still seeing blood pressure specialist. I had pre eclampsia and postpartum preeclampsia! Postpartum preclampsia isn't that common and I'll doubt you will get it but i'm here if you have any questions!

Thanks for your reply Sleepytrees. So far I have managed to resist taking the tablets. Last week I went for a Nuchal Fold scan which told me the risk of my baby having an abnormality was tiny. I had been worried about this due to my age of 41 years. In the few days after, my blood pressure did seem to come down and I started to relax a bit. Then yesterday I went and had a bleed so needless to say my BP is back up again. I have to go for a scan tomorrow so hoping all will be fine and I can start to relax again and maybe it will bring my BP back down. What a rollercoaster ride this is!

I hope everything is ok tomorrow! Keep us updated. What is your blood pressure readings when high? Pregnancy is such a rollarcoaster and don't get me started on the hormones :)

Hi Sleepytrees, Thank God Everything was fine with baby yesterday on scan but they could not tell me in the hospital why I bled or why I am still bleeding a little. I thought I might have had a UTI as it's only when I go to the toilet but a urine test came back negative. Going to see my GP tomorrow so plan to discuss it with her.

Needless to say my blood pressure has been a bit up and down. When it's up it's mostly in the 140s/90s but have got one or 2 readings of around 160/110. Funnily though the headaches seem to have vastly improved.

    Will continue to battle on.
