Not sure what film you were watching but the very last shot in the original Dawn of the Dead is of a load of zombies standing around in broad daylight, staring a helicopter flying away, and suffering no ill effects whatsoever.

are you thinking of Gremlins?

The very first zombie scene in NOTLD is in a cemetery in daylight. all the Romero films have zombies out in daylight with no discernible effects, as do almost all depictions of zombies in pop culture.
