Anyone know a decent free tool for helping design a database schema?

Not looking for anything complicated - basically just looking for a neater alternative to scribbling on a notepad. Don't need it to generate any SQL, just something to help visualise the layout.

    Linux or web based. Thanks.

I've tried a few of the online ones for general modeling. Plenty of options out there. You could browse the chrome plugins (although most are simply web links but they will be added to your app list in chrome which is handy).

Power Architect. Its not brilliant, but it is free. Also SQL Workbench has an ERD design feature.

Not free, but Visio can be pretty good if you have access to it. Otherwise you could look at the various free UML tools out there. StarUML seems to be popular, but I haven't tried it myself.

edit: oh, just spotted the linux/web based requirement

Simple & light, Dia is an open source (visio like) drawing tool.
    http://projects.gnome.org/dia/??

It's a standard in the repos of most linux distros and is also available as a binary for windows.

Cheers for all the replies, I must check those out.

I found dbschema earlier, does the job pretty well for now, but not sure how many of the features you lose when the 15-day trial expires, so I'll probably fall back to one of those other options then.
