Money course for self employed person

Hi all,

I hope I'm in the right place with this. I'm about to leave my job to become self-employed. I'm confident I'm making the right decision, but one area I need to brush up on is money and tax. I want to take a course, but not sure what exactly to look for.


Does anyone have any experience in taking a course concentrating on finance and tax for a self employed person?


Any help is appreciated.

You need an accountant for the tax side of it.

These courses are generally excellent and cover this and many other areas that you need to understand before or at least along side working for yourself. The course content and indeed quality has been much improved and tweaked over the years. I have recommended them to several friends in recent times and all the feedback is very positive.
Depending on the scale of your business, you may not need to engage an accountant as the Revenue online site (ros.ie) is very easy to use and quite intuitive in operation. Your course will cover this area.

My business will be indeed at a small scale - just me providing a service. No employees, no business premises etc.

The book keeping side of things is the one that concerns me the most, so between doing a course or two, and probably engaging an accountant for at least the first year, I'll hopefully have things covered.

Take a look at some of the online book-keeping/accounting systems, they can be surprisingly easy to use.

They won't replace your accountant but they should save you money compared to handing your account a shoe-box full of invoices and receipts every month/quarter/year.

http://www.sageone.ie/accounts/ is one example but there are plenty of others. Most have a free-trial so you can try before you buy. Your accountant may even be able to recommend one which allows him to login to help manage things.
