Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Just looking at the recent World Rankings it raised a few eyebrows id say. Colombia 5th?? Ecuador 12th??

I mean neither were ever world beaters even when Colombia had Higuita (who was a mad man) and Carlos Valderrama. This system is totally bonkers. Colombia havent qualififed for the World cup since 1998. Granted they had a good 2012 and beat Uruguay 4-0 but surely there must be a better way of working out rankings then the current system.

    FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking Procedure

The basic logic of these calculations is simple: any team that does well in world football wins points which enable it to climb the world ranking.

A team’s total number of points over a four-year period is determined by adding:

    · the average number of points gained from matches during the past 12 months;
    and

    · the average number of points gained from matches older than 12 months (depreciates yearly).

Calculation of points for a single match

The number of points that can be won in a match depends on the following factors:

    • Was the match won or drawn? (M)

    • How important was the match (ranging from a friendly match to a FIFA World Cup™ match)? (I)

    • How strong was the opposing team in terms of ranking position and the confederation to which they belong? (T and C)

These factors are brought together in the following formula to ascertain the total number of points (P).

    P = M x I x T x C

The following criteria apply to the calculation of points:

    M: Points for match result

Teams gain 3 points for a victory, 1 point for a draw and 0 points for a defeat. In a penalty shoot-out, the winning team gains 2 points and the losing team gains 1 point.

    I: Importance of match

Friendly match (including small competitions): I = 1.0

    FIFA World Cup™ qualifier or confederation-level qualifier: I = 2.5

Confederation-level final competition or FIFA Confederations Cup: I = 3.0

    FIFA World Cup™ final competition: I = 4.0

    T: Strength of opposing team

The strength of the opponents is based on the formula: 200 – the ranking position of the opponents

As an exception to this formula, the team at the top of the ranking is always assigned the value 200 and the teams ranked 150th and below are assigned a minimum value of 50. The ranking position is taken from the opponents’ ranking in the most recently published FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking.

    C: Strength of confederation

When calculating matches between teams from different confederations, the mean value of the confederations to which the two competing teams belong is used. The strength of a confederation is calculated on the basis of the number of victories by that confederation at the last three FIFA World Cup™ competitions (see following page). Their values are as follows:

    UEFA/CONMEBOL 1.00
    CONCACAF 0.88
    AFC/CAF 0.86
    OFC 0.85

How many times are people going to give out about the FIFA rankings system?? Its obviously not going to be 100% realistic, how can it? Everyone is always going to have different opinions.

Win your games and you go up the rankings, don't win your games and you are likely to drop in the rankings. Its not ****ing rocket science!

Why does anyone even give a fk? It's irrelevant.

while the rankings are flawed, they are based on results, not ability

I think they are a major factor when deciding seedings for major tournaments.

amazing to see Brazil so far down. Same with the USA, while it can be argued that the system is flawed they were usually a top ten owing to the easy qualification route they had.
    Haiti 38th?

Brazil got beaten by England, are England better than Brazil? Answer yes when they last played each other. That's how the system works.

Ireland are better than the Netherlands then, right?

Cos we beat them the last time we played them!

Compared to other teams Brazil have less compitive games so even when they win games they do not get as many points in the system

USA have had a shocking year losing to both Honduras and Jamaica in recent World cup qualifing games

If the FIFA rankings was just some harmless, fun way to estimate who the best teams are and to stimulate discussion and opinions then tend I'd agree with you.

However it has effected teams in the past (eg WC2010 play-off seeding order) and to my knowledge FIFA haven't yet ruled out repeating this method for WC2014 play-offs. In that regard think it's a joke that a system that is clearly flawed has already been applied "for real".
