Pope Benedict's decision to live in the Vatican after he resigns will provide him with security and privacy. It will also offer legal protection from any attempt to prosecute him in connection with sexual abuse cases around the world, Church sources and legal experts say....

Maybe that other paragon of Catholic virtue, Tony Blair, could move in with him. The "crazies" are out to get him too.

The Vatican is raising the possibility that the conclave to elect the next pope might start earlier than March 15, the earliest date possible under current rules that require a 15-20 day waiting period after the papacy becomes vacant....

... He said the Vatican rules are open to interpretation and that "this is a question that people are discussing".

    Fixed that for them...

'He said the Vatican rules are open to interpretation when it suits our purpose.'

Golly gosh though, they are in a bit of a hurry arn't they?

I read in the Herald, that Benny has an apartment down the end of the garden, behind the Vatican.

He will spend his remaining days deep in prayer, and he doesn't want to be disturbed while he is 'praying'.

I also heard that he's getting a fibre optic cable hooked up to his Alienware pc, so he can play his belf priest character in World of Warcraft, while simultaneously downloading a Terabyte of porn. He's got a lot of catching up to do.

You don't want to say the Jesuits run the Vatican on the religious thread. I recently found out, that you're not supposed to say that over there. Here was me thinking I thought people know about this stuff. Is it even a secret to most people? It's 2013 yanno.

Lightening strikes the Vatican on the same day the Pope resigns, something is up.

Lightning strikes the earth between 1 and 8 million times a day, depending who you ask.

The delay is normally to give time everyone time to travel to Rome. Not needed this time as for the first time in 600 years there is advance notice.

Oh, if only someone would invent some method of transportation that would allow the Cardinals to get to Rome in less than 15 days...

Back in 2005 when JP II died that trip on a slow boat must have been a trial...

He said the Vatican rules are open to interpretation

What? Since when? Isn't the intransigence of their rules their go-to excuse for refusing to modernise?

    Conspiracy Theory Number 2:

Ratzinger resigned over the ongoing Marcial Maciel/Legion of Christ scandal:

    http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/343750

I'm still going with the "advanced age + keep an eye on the next guy" reason.

Not a terribly convincing conspiracy theory, I have to say, even according to the relatively low bar against which conspiracy theories are measured. Ratzinger is generally sees as the (comparatively) good guy in the Legion of Christ debacle - its an open secret that they were protected for years under Wotyla, who wouldn't hear a word against them, but Ratzinger (of course) had the dirt on them, and within months of his elevation Maciel was denounced and disgraced, and the Legion had Vatican "visitors" crawling all over it.

Pope Benedict the 16th has begun a week-long private spiritual retreat ahead of his resignation at the end of the month.

Benedict and some of his top cardinals will devote this week to daily prayers in a frescoed private chapel in the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican during Lent.

He's not even working out his notice.....

Any other cynic think 'Benedict and some of his top cardinals will devote this week to daily prayers' sounds like a lets get together and decide who gets the job session?

A photo gallery of 10 of Benny's most fab-u-lous outfits - that hat in photo 2 does nothing for him. Serious style error.

You know, in any other walk of life the right thing to do would have been shopping Maciel to the police as and when he got the incriminatory evidence, not waiting around until his boss popped his clogs, and even then, just slapping him on the wrist.

Why is it that in the catholic church such reprehensible inactivity (both before and after Ratzinger was elevated to papacy) is to be applauded?

seems to be the crux of it, benny don't want to face the music so he'll bravely hide in the vatican rather than face charges over the child abuse cases.

real a paragon of morality, an example to us all in how a good catholic should deal with the problems in life, deny everything and hide.

    Well said.

And Benny not so long ago stated that the Catholic Church was the one true church.

(I wonder if he was inflammable when he came out with that statement. :p)

So far as I know, Maciel's sexual misbehaviour was with adults of full age - not a crime.
