What is the fare ? I checked Cork <> Galway once and it seemed a bit expensive for a day trip.

At this stage I'd give the pro side the free taxi and the anti side the train.

Don't forget that in the best tradition of rail days out you have to count the number of fare payers and pass holders.

(Though I think that used be more pertinent when a bus was hired as part of the outing).

13.45 return arrives Lim Jct 16.11

OR

11.30 dep Galway to Dublin (change at Port Arlington for Cork arr 16.30 ish or chnage Heuston to arr Cork about 17.20

fare €54.60 Mallow to Galway and return, seems to cover both routes.

Do it in style.

Return home on the 16:55 Limerick-Ballybrophy service. It gets in at 18:51 and connects with both the 18:00 Ex Dublin (18:54) and 17:20 Ex Cork services (18:55); they both cross at the Brophy. If you want to max out the mileage, you can get a Limerick Junction shuttle back in time for the branch train or alight at 15:39 and get a bit of grub in at Limerick

i'd probably go for the one with the changes at Portarlington and Port Laoise... extra photo opportunities during the change. The Ballybrophy idea would be ideal for Dublinites though!
