Don't think they identified Waterford as a good area for expansion though... Moreso Galway and Cork.

Have you a source for this? They're already in Galway, Cork and Limerick, so opening a branch in Waterford would seem like a logical next step if they are expanding around the country, I would have thought.

Credit to all Waterford (and beyond presumably) people who helped fund the €10,000 the new street gardens were looking for. People digging deep in tough times to help out its fellow citizens, city etc

The city has never looked better imo. Streets always seem clean. Roundabouts are landscaped. Buildings are being looked after, flowers are blooming, more trees than ever seem to be planted and are flourishing, roads are being fixed, marked etc. Puts me in a positive mood driving around anyway. :)

Totally Agree with you. I walked around Waterford last Saturday and was surprised at how clean it was and how nice the new garden development looked. Congrats to all involved

Was only thinking the same myself and they have finally filled in that big hole in the ground on Johns street just outside K recipe ...i wonder was it because the president is going that way tomorrow ;)

article on Waterford in Today's Examiner.

Waterford city will be buzzing this weekend as it takes a step back in time to celebrate its 1,100th birthday with a comprehensive programme of cultural activities, especially for young people.

The WiKID festival will focus on children and interactive children’s events, while showcasing the heritage and culture of Ireland’s oldest city. Events include a sleepover at the architectural award-winning Medieval Museum, where participants will slumber while surrounded by ancient artefacts, and a Viking excavation where children can experience what it is like to be an archaeologist. There will also be a Viking school where they can learn to make and handle weaponry. There will also be fun for the rest of the family with archery for families and an authentic Medieval Fair.

The event, organised by Waterford City Council, will be launched by President Michael D Higgins on Friday.

“WiKID offers a fantastic birthday festival to mark Waterford1100 but, within this, something that could become an independent festival,” said Eamonn McEneaney, director of Waterford Museum of Treasures and an organiser of WiKID.

One of the highlights of the weekend will be the Vadrarfjordr Viking Village and Viking School where people can meet and watch ‘Vikings’ at work and participate in an authentic recreation of Viking life. A special Viking School will allow children to handle (under supervision) authentic weapons and to design their own wooden shields.

Viking history will further come to life at the Medieval Fair with its authentic sights, sounds and smells, and where Viking traders will demonstrate and sell their crafts. One of the most eagerly anticipated events is The Big Dig — a simulated and controlled archaeological dig where children aged from five to 12 years can work alongside real archaeologists. The Big Dig will take place in association with the School of Archaeology in UCD.

Have a Go Archery! offers safe target shooting for all the family with Hungarian horse bows.

Waterford is renowned for its street theatre and visitors can wander back in time with WiKID Streets, which will feature medieval-themed entertainment for families. There will be interactive theatre with Tumble Circus, which promises to turn the circus tradition upside down, with disobedient clowns, suffering acrobats and confused jugglers.

There will also be circus fun in the city’s Central Library, with The Tallest Smallest Circus, where the audience have to stand in for the missing circus acts.

Younger culture vultures can participate in puppet-making workshops, as well as backstage tours of the city’s beautifully restored Theatre Royal, and interactive sessions with Little Red Kettle theatre company.

The ‘Cool Stuff’ programme includes a talk by 14-year-old Waterford native and gaming entrepreneur Jordan Casey.

Full programme and booking info available at www.waterford1100.com.

The City was looking great over the weekend and there seemed to be lots of visitors around,

The Rally & the Marathon & the two big hurling matches this weekend should mean big crowds around the City Centre! Hopefully the weather plays its part & remember to be nice to our visitors!

And then the following weekend it's daytripper and the Tramore prom festival.
I wonder how the sales are going for daytripper. As we know Waterford is notoriously bad for supporting these things.

Very low house prices. Just saw a house in the Folly for €125,000..... Real bargain to be had there!

It really is quite a sparkling article. Nice to hear some serious positivity, in contrast to the usual "de towen is fúcked" pessimism.

It would make sense for someone like Google to just buy up a few of those Waterford startups and use them to develop Talent for the wider Google group.
It would probably only cost about €20mil - €30mil to buy up all the startups and then you would have gained about another 100-200 highly skilled employees without the headache or costs of recruiting etc.

Firms like Google are struggling to get people to fill roles in Dublin and they could probably pay people about 3/4 of what they pay in Dublin to Waterford staff and get just as good talent and have all the other benefits of having a Satellite facility in the same country feeding into their main worldwide talent pool and expertise for less cost.

I know that this is done by other industries especially in the states where they setup in smaller communities when they have reached their limit in larger cities and it has worked well.

It would be great for the whole country as well if there was a micro silicon valley type cluster in Waterford so come on Google get the chequebook out :)

I actually think more should be done to promote Waterford as a cruise city. How many of you actually knew those cruise ships were coming in yesterday?

Apparently they are always more than willing to welcome locals on board to show them the inside of their cruise liners...

The cruise calls are on the port of Waterford site for months in advance but I don't think we're exploiting the possible potential of their visits.

In other towns and cities there would be signs all over town welcoming the passengers of the hamburg, seabourn legend and the Silvercloud...but there was none of this in Waterford because only a handful knew they were coming.

Also surely something could be done with the Marina over there. It is awful. If it's a potential gateway for thousands of tourists then it really needs to be developed.

Does anyone know how big a ship has to be before it cannot come up the river. I know the one with 3000 people was too big so wondering was it just a little too big or way too big?

its down to the draught of the ship , celebrity infinity was 8.3 meters, sliver cloud was 5.7 meters so I guess the answer lies in-between , tides would play a factor as well big spring over 4.5 meters , neap about 3 !

Lots of coverage in today's Sunday Business Post. It's an article that wants to show the positives of employment in Waterford rather than the constant negativity we are frequently associated with. Front page reference too, which is fantastic.

True, gave a good account of efforts being made to improve situation. Did not realise the €10 million Viking triangle investment was Failte Ireland's biggest capital investment to date.

Is there much left planned for the Viking triangle or is that the extent of it?

To Hell with Google. Its record on buying and screwing up startups is terrible. Let those Waterford startups develop to be world beaters.

Early Christmas present....just saw on their site that Metalman have ordered a canning machine, cans a bit of a novelty on the craft/quality beer scene in Ireland but not so in the US. Awesome!
