It's fairly straight forward. your dog is under control, the offending dog isn't. Case over. That's the legal side anyway - question is, what the judge would believe. this country unfortunately favors the tiny little dogs cause they aren't viewed as dangerous. As long as the general public hasn't learned that every breed can bite and kill (see case of baby infant killed by the family's JRT) it will be hard to proof in court that your dog didn't initiate the fight but only defending her/himself. As owner of a big dog, you loose more often than you win.:(

Thanks, yeah it's what I mean really size and looks alone they'll try say its my fault. Think it's time to start giving doggy parks a miss (was always the plan when he got older anyway).

Already dreading the warmer weather when all the little govshīteś are out giving their staffs/pits/rotties their yearly walk and of course, off lead!

Sorry to butt in, how do you carry six dogs around in a car, safely? And how would you pick up the dog Sh!te if you have 3 dog leads in each hand?

it might not be much use since inconsiderate owners are unlikely to know about it, but did you hear about the yellow ribbon ?
    http://www.facebook.com/#!/YellowDogIreland

The idea is that if you think your dog needs some space and is not ready to greet and meet, you attach a yellow ribbon to his/her collar/lead to let other dog owners know.

I suppose if this got publicized enough it might help ?

My dog is the extra duper super friendly everyone's a friend type :o
I lock the retractable lead and use basic communication skills to suss out whether other dogs/owners are up for it though.

I think the yellow dog idea is brilliant, but unfortunately I think its only responsible, respectful owners that will take any notice of it, and those people would probably be considerate anyway. However, we can but try :)

The 6 dogs thing really is intriguing people!!!

I have a very large car and have a dog guard behind the rear passanger seats, a tailgate guard at the boot door and a crate each for the 2 terriers. Everyone else happily travels together in the rest of the space. I also take them all camping with me and have had absolutely no trouble with any campsites, all that happens is we become attraction number 1 for other kids on the campsite.

As to picking up the poo? I have all my dogs trained to walk to heel on my left hand so I have 6 leads in my left hand leaving my right hand free, in incidents of poo I push the leads up my left arm and have 2 hands free. The dogs wait calmly while I do it. I have them trained like that cos I needed 1 hand free to walk any foster dog or boarding dog I had, and later I needed them to walk nicely beside my buggy.

When they're all off lead I'm constantly watching for anyone dropping a load, one of the reasons I dislike randomers coming up to chat to me because it distracts me from the poo watching :o On that note, my 3 year old is my official poo spotter and tells me if she sees anyone assuming the position. If for whatever reason I don't get to pick my own dog's poo up I pick up a random poo ,and unfortunately there's a lot of spare poo where I live, so the poo karma is balanced.

This is one of the funniest posts I've read in a while!
Not only because the description of how you manage is brilliant, but for those expressing disbelief that you could possible manage to walk 6 dogs at once, you now reveal that not only are you walking 6 dogs, you also have a buggy, a 3 year old child, and perhaps a 7th dog on the other side of the buggy :D:D:D
    Gas altogether!

I am my own circus when I go for a walk :p
Buggy is now no more though, it's in the process of being converted into a dog cart for the 3 year old so the locals will think I've officially lost the plot :D

There's no such thing as idiot dog owners.

Just stupid, aggressive dogs that thrive on bullying and intimidation.

In the animal world I think that dogs are the lowest of the low.

Mod note: please don't feed this troll. Now banned from forum.
    Thanks,

What type of dogs do you have? I'm still not convinced you can handle six in all situations, I've been watching this thread as it goes on since last nite, a lot of passive aggressive supporters in here too.

Thing is though, you don't need to be convinced that I can handle them in all situations. I have been able to handle them in any situation I've ever been in, I can call them off prey, away from playing with other dogs, away from people, horses, other animals. They come camping with me, 5 out of 6 compete in agility and the 6th is retired, 2 of them were certified pet therapy dogs, they have been with me all over the country and spent a couple of Christmas's in the UK with me when I visited family, they happily allow foster dogs, boarding dogs and my sister's 2 dogs move in with us for 9 months. They are very well socialised and trained dogs who are happy knowing that I'm the head boss, my word is law and in return I'll protect them from any threats. I'm constantly managing them, and changing things as the dogs change and the pack dynamics change and their needs change. Now I have 2 elderly dogs so it means other dynamics come into play so you adjust accordingly, it's an organic thing living and sharing life with 6 dogs.

Doom, I don't really understand why you're pestering TMD, so I'll ask you now to desist, because it seems to me to be uncalled for: you're jumping to a lot of assumptions with all your questioning.
Also, re your passive-aggressive comment, can I remind you that if you have a problem with a post, report it. Please do not take it on yourself in the way you have, because, ironically, it's a bit passive-aggressive.

Having read past posts from TooManyDogs regarding her dogs, I can well believe that she is well able to handle them in all situations. I'm by no means a passive aggressive supporter but my impression, for what it's worth, is that she has taken the time and care to understand her dogs and to lay down boundaries to keep everyone safe and happy.

Dogs respect confident authority, which TooManyDogs has in spades to even contemplate taking six dogs out in the one hand to begin with, before you even add in a kid and a buggy! :D

If you're a good person who puts in the work with your dogs and there's enough room for everyone to live together comfortably, then I reckon you can get as many as you can manage. Not everyone with multiple dogs is letting them run wild and be the scourge of the neighbourhood.

More power to her, I say.

Also, I freaking LOVE that photo of the dogs! I'm playing photo-assumption here but that looks like one happy and well adjusted family! Such gorgeous dogs.

To get back to the rant by the OP. I agree, re other dog owners who clearly dont have control over their dog allowing it to run up and investigate mine. The cries of "dont worry he/she's friendly/wont bite" are now met with "yours wont, but mine will!"*

*I dont actually mean this literally, she is a rescue dog and clearly has some issues re other dogs in her past. She wants nothing to do with them, is terrified of them and so gets aggressive. I have this mostly under control and she is improving, but its not helped by other owners. Ive taken to stepping between them as the other dog approaches and telling the other dog "No" in a firm voice. that seems to work quite well, surprisingly from a stranger to them.

Sometimes you need to be that blunt to get it through their heads though, even if it's not strictly true, why should anyone's dog/s have to put up with that, and be challanged by that, particularly if they're a nervous dog

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 616 ✭✭✭LucyBliss

I walk mine on the lead because they can get startled very easily around traffic and we walk around the city. It's easier on all our nerves. But I have one who does not like it when strange dogs (or people) get all in her face without her having time to get accustomed to them. So it was very frustrating one day to have a large lab come bounding up to us and just refused to go away. He was all sniffing her and she got so freaked that I thought she was about to wiggle out of the harness. The owner came along and just said "oh he's very friendly", and walked off. The dog went to follow him and then went and did the same to another dog, whose owner looked like he was ready to explode.

    It's extremely frustrating.

The fact that you can get them all to sit still for a photo should be enough to convince any of the doubters about your control!

I don't agree with you at all
First thing is you said that days like today you were tempted to let your dogs attack her single dog
If that's the case and your thoughts about dogs you shouldn't be allowed to have a dog never mind 6 of them
Also if your walking down the beach with all six of your dogs why should another person be forced to move out of your way just because you have six dogs
I've had run ins with people like you before that think because they have more than 3 dogs that you have the right away And everyone else has to move aside
I never have moved out of the way because I would feel bullied and i have an American Akita ( all 10half stone of him) and the looks I've gotten from not moving out of the way is ridiculous as if because you've more dogs than me I should move aside
    Not a chance
If its such a big problem then I think you should find a new home for them dogs and stop thinking you've more rights because you've more dogs

You've totally misread the OP, totally. She's not demanding anyone move out of her way, but that they control their off-leash dog. The rest of your post seems based on that misinterpretation.

 Cos that's the way the world works. I've also been tempted to chant for the Goblin King when my 3 year old is behaving like a gremlin, does that mean I shouldn't be allowed have a child???

Also if your walking down the beach with all six of your dogs why should another person be forced to move out of your way just because you have six dogs

I think you need to go back and read my OP, where in it I clearly state that I moved away from them when she chucked her dog out of the car to exercise himself, moved further away when she finally got out of her car to actually walk her dog, moved to the very end of the limited beach when she started making a beeline for me in order to have a chat, and finally could go no further away from her on the beach so went home. Not sure how any of that is me refusing to move so if you could tell me how I made her feel bullied I"m all ears.
because you've more dogs than me I should move aside
    Not a chance
Because I have more dogs than everyone else I always move away, including, as in this case, go back home and do my walk later.
If its such a big problem then I think you should find a new home for them dogs and stop thinking you've more rights because you've more dogs
Yes, I'm going to rehome my well trained, well behaved dogs because other people can't control theirs??? I'll get right on that

That's Wiley, GSD x spaniel, odd combo! She's more unusual looking in real life, like something out of The Muppets :D
