Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

February photowalk(?)

Bit of a slightly different excursion, if anybody might be interested.
Was thinking about maybe an evening (after dark and with the tide out) on Sandymount strand (in Dublin) with some burning steel wool, sparklers, torches, lighters or whatever else folk would like to take along for some fancy-schmancy light trails. Maybe for the 28th Feb, as the tides seem to suit well about then. Sunset is about 6pm and low tide is about 6:50pm.
Anybody interested? Voice your support or opposition below...

(Sorry - thread title should be Feb)

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

Cheers for changing the title. Don't worry about dinner. Have a big lunch or a late dinner.

How about a whole box of burning Dominicans? I'd pay to see that. (not much though).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,637 ✭✭✭✭OldGoat

Hardware stores or home decoration stores. It's mostly used for preparing surfaces to paint.get the finest grade they have.

Does the wool go on fire without an accelerator?

    PhinglasPhil & anyone else who sees the thread and is thinking about tagging along;

These walks are great fun, and are for anyone with any sort of camera. When I went on my first one, in 2010 I think, I was a bit nervous about everyone else being "pro's" with really expensive gear and laughing at the beginner in the corner not really knowing what he was doing.
It was far from that, everyone is really nice, theres no expectation to be great or have amazing gear, just a camera and a bit of an interest. The knowledge shared between people is brilliant, and when I gave someone, with better gear and in my opinion much better photos than me, a tip on how I do something, it really showed me that these walks put everyone on a level playing field.

The images that come out of them are amazing.

One thing I will say is this, ask people questions. Everyone I've met has been delighted to share information on why they do something when taking an picture or the like.

Is it mainly just aimed at the light/fire element of photography? thanks

Ill let trooney pick the actual spot but there's three small car parks along the strand so I'd say we'll just meet in one of them, letting trooney decide which one.

Farmlife, the original idea I believe was for light painting with torches/sparklers/fire etc. there's not a massive amount of interest on the beach itself otherwise, but I'm sure you'll find plenty to snap regardless! Be it the painting or being creative with the seafront bits and pieces.

I'll be shooting other stuff too. There's nothing to stop anyone going for a wander to find some other shots.

    Hi Folks

I would love to tag along but is there any teeny weeny chance the night could be brought forward one night to the Wednesday night as I'm in Dublin that night and really enjoy the night shoots

    I wouldn't be making Wednesday I wouldn't think

I have my photography class on a Wednesday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,268 ✭✭✭trooney

Meet at the car park beside the Martello tower, as suggested, for 6:30/7ish.

Folk are free to take shots of whatever they like, not just light trails, if they so desire.
I don't think moving it to Weds would suit as well, as low tide is a bit too early on Weds. Sorry bout that.
I would also remind people that if we are going to be playing with fire do be a bit aware. And, of course, that the strand is, of course, tidal, so to be aware of that too.
I would def recommend clothing that is less likely to burn - i.e. made of natural materials rather than synthetic. Safety glasses handy to have if you have some too.
Obviously a tripod will be de rigueur. And if the weather is shîte then it will be sacked off.

Also, as mentioned previously, all skill levels and equipment are more than welcome.
