Bit of a slap in the face to counties like waterford to see that 43 million euros are to be spent in DUBLIN to improve their transport system!

Imagine the good that money could do a place like Waterford, how can spending that type of money be justified?

A million people in greater dublin is how you justify that drop in the ocean. Its on bike schemes isn't it?

On bikes and crap like that yeah, basicly improving their transport system! Also i dont think that cos they have 1 million in the capital that they should automaticly get this upgrade, they already have a huge transport system, that money could have gone much much further in a county like waterford on job creation!

So that's roughly €4.30 per capita

If Waterford county has 107k population, the equivalent investment is €460k.

Are you saying sums of that magnitude haven't been invested in Waterford's transport infrastructure in recent years?

    It's a pittance tbh.

Do you not think Dublin has had vast vast sums of money spent on their transport systems in recent years? bike schemes, The Dart, The Luas, Dublin Bus, Its not really my point, its just with the economic climate were in now and all the cuts that have taken place and downgrades and what have ye!

Bike scheme was funded by JC Decauux in exchange for DCC giving them advertising space.

Dublin Bus services have been cut to bits under the guise of 'network improvements' and will be cut further I'd imagine.

Luas runs without a subsidy from the state.

Public transport in Dublin is embarassing compared cities of similar population size and other capitol cities.

From the taxes collected from the people who live and work in Dublin.

cost is covered by the sale of advertising space in Dublin so maybe Waterford should sell some advertising space and reinvest the money?

The Dublin bike scheme is the most successful in the world 2.6 million is being invested in expanding it, the other 40.4 million is being invested in other forms of public transport. Public transport in Dublin is very very poor compared to similar cities

As someone else pointed out it's the equivalent of 406k being invested in Waterford, I'm sure at least that much was spent on the bypass?

You cant go and compare cities in europe like for like, you just cant, Frankfurt and Dublin? phhhhh, theres no comparrison and they shouldnt be compared like for like, The point being that in this time of monies being cut from old people disabled people and all people in general, 45 million in one county seems a bit much, Should we compare it to James Reilly looking after clinics in his own constituency Varadkar looking after Dublin!

You answered your own question. Just change Europe to Ireland.

Not all countries in Europe are going through the same economical disaster that Ireland are!

Its like lets pull all these services here there and everywhere and lavish one part of the country with nice stuff.

That money could be better spent and better spread, I think its a case of having wrong priorities!

There is no harm in investment that pays for itself.

This year, the government will spend about €54,500 million of which perhaps €1,000 million will go to Waterford. http://per.gov.ie/wp-content/uploads/Expenditure-Report-Final-Version-for-Print-04-Dec-2012-pdf-Adobe-Acrobat-Pro.pdf

    €43 per capita, even.

Another thing to realise lads is that by using bikes your off-setting someone using a car. A car that would result in fuel being imported and money leaving the economy. This reduces car dependence, reducing fuel consumption and making sure more money stays in Ireland.
