On the sea area forecasts they give the distance for visibility at the weather stations and weather buoys. If the stations are automatic at the various headlands and lighthouses how can they determine visibilty?

ME use a present weather sensor, Vaisala FD12P, which gives an indication of current condition and visibility. UKMO use the same model.
You will not hear a visibility report from an Irish weather buoy eg when the latest report from M5 is broadcast, the visibility is from Tuskar.
