    See http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/multi/external-hard-drives-1045.html

theres self powered drives,, use a external, power supply,
and theres ones that use usb cable ,eg take the power from the pc usb port.I Prefer those ones.
    EASIER to carry around.
quote Simply plug the included USB cable into your computer – no external power supply is needed.
TO buy a 500 gig in a shop, would cost round 55 euro approx.
    pcworld, maplins, peats,

    eg http://www.peats.com/cgi-bin/catalog_v2.cgi?id=30479&type=product

above one is shock resistant .usb 2.

Read the tv manual, some tvs will require the drive, to be formatted in fat32 file format, in control panel, admin, disk management, storage,

In disk management, storage, you can format a drive in NTFS , or FAT32
    file system,
NTFS IS More effecient in regard to space ,effeciency.
pluG A usb key into the tv,to test it.
OR just format drive in fat32 ,file format,
put one video file on it ,then try it.IF you are not sure, what format it uses? What model tv have you got,
    eg sony lx540
the tv just looks at the hard drive, is it windows file format,
ntfs , or FAT32? its irrelevant ,what brand ,make the hd is?
my tv would only read fat32,file format, bought tv,in 2008.

i think all samsung tvs read fat32,more expensive models read ntfs,
    see,
    http://forum.videohelp.com/threads/322160-Playing-Media-Files-on-Samsung-TV-Through-the-USB-Port

read the manual, or just try fat32 format, right click drive, propertys, hardware, to see is it fat,or ntfs format.
SEE media usb drive info, format type,
it should play mkv, avi video files, or look on samsung uk support ,your model, xxx, eg 570khg model,
    Manual download.
or buy a usb key,2euro,format,in ntfs, quick format, try it.

    google your model,
eg Samsung TV Model 570khg usb hard drive format ntfs fat32,
mY SAMSUNG TV reads mp3,avi,mkv video files on my fat32 300gig drive.

It might be an idea to keep in mind the file size will have to be less than 4gb in size if your using fat32. So those large bluray rips might not play.

Thats why most drives are formatted in ntfs, its more effecient,eg like 32bit vs 64bit, os ,winxp 32bit can only acess 3.5 gig ram .
Fat32 can only handle less than,4gig files.
