I decided to start a debate in here rather than getting the abuse on Adverts, but it just me or are the prices for used parts, especially "graphic cards" way over the top on Adverts.ie?

I'm literally looking at 2nd hand goods marked up over the cost of buying them new online, it's so frustrating.

the problem with adverts, in my experience, is that if you price something at the price you want or a little above you will have people offer crazy low amounts. if you price it too low or just right they will still want it lower. if you price it too high they will start quoting websites that you can get it on cheaper. you just cant win with some people.

i know thats the nature of negotiations etc though. adverts has improved somewhat in that the mods seem quicker to remove thread spoiling nonsense and the minimum offer thing is better now too.

So, make an offer on the item. If they don't take it screw'em. I see no problem in pricing stuff high. The price will settle to what people are willing to pay in the end. That's how the free market works.

Kind of a waste of time though don't you think?

I understand the point about people always trying to cut down the prices no matter what you set them at but c'mon, some of the adverts on there should be reported for extortion. 90% of the PC's for sale on there don't even add up to what people are looking for them brand new out of boxes.

Suppose they're preying on the innocent.

Adverts is a terrible place. Once upon a time we had a forum to trade stuff, pc gear, graphics cards etc. Then they closed it and made adverts.....

I don't have a problem paying for something but you're clearly missing the point I've brought up.

@Pog: Aye, I'd imagine it would of been a lot better for the buyer when they actually had a voice when it came giving something a more realistic value. On the other hand if you're dealing with a mentality like HelpWithIt then what's the point?

"if you want something pay more for it than it's worth brand new"

No one is forcing you to pay anything. The onus is on you to find the best price of an item. In 2013 with the internet there is no excuse for not being able to find out what something is really worth. If someone comes along and pays for it at higher price then that's their fault for being lazy. I don't agree with your socialistic market price fixing ethics.

Now if someone lie's in their add and gives false info like including pirated software and saying it's legit, then that's wrong. They should be banned.

Dude it's just a good auld fashion rant, call it an Irish thing, remember when we used to complain?

I've made my point anyways, no point in going around in circles repeating myself either but you're entitled to your opinion. But if you seen Tesco over charging for a gone off pint of milk you complain too. ;)

It's not just the price or indeed the sellers that should be discussed in this thread? Some of the buyers antics leave an awful lot to be desired too!

When I need something I research it, decide on new or second hand, then decide the price I'm willing to pay.

That's my basis, regardless of what the asking price is.

And that's a very reasonable approach and how it should be IMO.

When you don't like the price of an item in a bricks & mortar store you just put it back on the shelf & walk out the door.....

I've an iPad up for sale at the moment for a friend in work @ €399 (same price from Apple as it's BNIB, still in it's seal). Here's me thinking I'd get offers of €350+ - nope... 3 people telling me I can get it for €399 from Apple?! I fecking know that already, that's why it says "Make an offer". Had to report them as post deformation and the mods removed them. Quite surprised I got no "I'll give you €100 for it" or "swap you for a go kart" kinda offers yet.

Why would somebody offer €350+ when they can get it for €400 from Apple with full warranty? Probably cheaper if they use the student discount.

If someone wanted a sealed iPad the only reason they would buy from someone on adverts instead of Apple.com is to save money. And it would need to be a decent saving. You don't even mention what warranty period is left.

By asking the same price as Apple.com and not mentioning the warranty period you are already starting out on the wrong foot. So of course you're going to get those kind of replies.

Why would someone pay €350 when they can pay €400?? - Your kidding right? That question answers itself (it's €50 cheaper - 12.5% difference). Not everyone is a student either. Might as well say "use your Apple Employee discount". Also, warranty is on all products for 1 year that are purchased from new.

There's nothing wrong with the price of the iPad, it's perfectly reasonable to ask for the RRP with Best Offer esp. since a person could get it much cheaper than normal (my ad is listed €379 by the way). Not everyone is concerned with warranty either, some people are just happy to buy a product because it's brand new and to save money.

As above, warranty is by default automatically on all products for 1 year that are purchased from new. This is not the first time I've sold something on Adverts, not my first iPad either (I have sold 2 others). If a person doesn't know there is a warranty on an item, they could very easily ask but these users are going out of their way to point out that's it's X price on this website (and mods agree, that's why 2 posts were removed). I got a PM from my most recent commenter telling me it's only c. €329 from Viking Direct and he's correct - except he's try to trick me because that's before VAT is added (link) to total €404 pre-shipping.
So of course you're going to get those kind of replies.

No it's not "of course". My gripe is the comments from other users who tell you that you can get it elsewhere for X amount and they only do that for 2 reasons:

    1 - Trolling your advertisement
2 - Want the item you have for sale but for a lot less that what you are offering.

If it's €400 for Apple direct, then go buy it from Apple direct and stop spamming my ad. It's so commonplace nowadays, especially with Apple products. I gave a perfectly detailed ad (€5 premium paid as well) with clear pictures and I have 100% feedback from 48 users and I have who's sold over 67 items - what's the point in this system if "of course I'm going to get those kind of replies". It's bollox that's what it is and the mods know this, thankfully they're quick to act.

With no warranty you are not selling the same thing that Apple are selling for €399. Anybody buying from you would taking a risk by not having a warranty and the saving would need to be proportionate.

A realistic asking price would be €350 to allow for haggling. If you got an offer of €320-330 I would take it. Only a fool would pay more.

The iPad is already up for €379 which is a very reasonable price with haggling permitted. Are you not realising it's identical to what you get from Apple?!

Agreed, but I bet when you go home you'll share your experience with someone you know and give them a heads up on the store prices in general.

How do you mean? Would I advise someone I know to buy online on the likes of Adverts.ie for a reduced cost v.s Apple prices?

    It's not identical.

When you buy from Apple you get a 1-year warranty and you have statutory consumer rights.

Yours has no warranty and the buyer gets no consumer rights. That makes it significantly less valuable. If you don't understand that then you're no different to the sellers that everybody is complaining about in this thread.

If not then there is no warranty as it likely it would take more than that time to accept a bid, receive payment, despatch the goods and have them received.

Here's the result - Estimated Expiration Date: February 22, 2013

    It DOES have a warranty.

That's Friday. The warranty is effectively expired.

It's really not exclusive to computer parts, it's pretty much everything on adverts.
