12 x 400m on Monday was hard to get motivated for, after the 20m LSR the previous weekend but felt good after the initial one or two. Had a few other good quality workouts this week so everything feels like its going to plan. Better touch that piece of wood before I jinx myself.

Missed out in getting planned 18mile lsr,had hoped to get it done this morning but again time constraints put paid to that.At least last week I still got some decent 10mile+ runs in but will have at least 2 if not 3 days this week where I won't be able to run:mad: but will have to make the runs that I do get around to doing really count.

Good week for me, had thought earlier in the week that I would be tight for time to fit all runs in but managed it. Had been speaking to a work colleague who also is a first timer and they were telling me about the Jeff Galloway method (run/walk), so I decided I would give it a go on my 12M LSR. I ran for a 5mins, brisk walk for 1min, major difference in my legs and also when I compare my time with a previous 12 miler, it was very similar. So with the 18 and 20 milers coming up, I think I am going to go with this method.

You have so many high quality miles done this year D, a few missed ones won't do you any harm. Dare I say the odd easier week might do your legs good in the long term!

I managed the two 'sessions' for the week, VO2 and LSR, but everything else fell by the wayside. And I'm still knackered, despite that. And I'm just back from a run in the sun, where I fell apart like Steve Staunton in '94.

It certainly felt hot out there today. If race day is like this I'll be taking a swim by Blackrock castle. Anybody know what effect temperatures of 20+ would have on predicted times? I'm guessing a really hot day could be as much as 10mins.

Folks, any opinions on the jeff galloway method for marathon training, i.e (run/walk). A work colleague of mine, who is also a first timer has been using this (and praising it hugely!!), so I decided i'd give it a go on my 12M LSR last weekend, ran 5 mins and a brisk walk for 1 minute, when I compared my times for the this distance with a run done a few weeks back, I came in a few minutes faster. I am contemplating using this for the pending 18 & 20 milers in the next few weeks. Any thoughts/advice??
May I add, as this is my first marathon (and probably my last!!), I would be delighted to have a time between 4.15 and 4.30

I was thinking the same thing myself, as I was running. I'm pale and red-haired too, so I'm quite sensitive to the heat in general. Plus I'm not great for hydrating on a run. A day like today even could scupper me. I think the point would be that you'd slow down for the first half and then slowly try pick it up if the conditions allow for it. It'd be good to have a plan - it could happen.

I've never done it, so I can't really offer anything of value. But with regard to your long training runs, it's all about time on your feet anyway, so it can't hurt in my opinion. The question I would ask though is if you need to do it or not? You seem to be managing well so far, so I would be loath to change it. And if you need to employ the strategy on race day for some reason, well it's there for you should you need it. But as I say, others will know better. This is my first marathon too. :)

I'm no expert on this Karen but we're only 6 weeks away from the big day now,IMO now is not the time to be trying new strategies unless a)your carrying an injury or b)you totally feel that you won't be able to run the distance.

The plan that you are following is all about running the distance on the day,not yesterday, today or tomorrow but on Monday June 3rd.

Now I would suggest during your lsr's that maybe when you take a water break that you might walk for that 20/30 secs or so & get back running again.
During the later stages of the marathon if you do find the need to walk/slow down even for a water station you may find it very hard to get back running again(I'm not trying to scare you:D) but if you have practiced it in training it should stand to you if the need be.

It's a bit conflicting what I wrote but it's my 2 cents worth.

I think pageant messiah was looking into this for DCM2012 but that was after his injury nightmare.

Totally got into lazy mode this week, so only 3 runs and 37 miles for me this week. Back on the horse this week with a new sense of vigour! Have adjusted my target time down a bit and that has renewed my enthusiasm a bit which had been flagging massively. 5 weeks from now it will all be over!

A lot of tough sessions this week. Mon: 10 x 800m, Wed 3m/2m/3m @ HM Pace, Fri: 8m @ PMP, Sat: 20 miles with last 5 @ PMP (starting at 6am), with a couple of other easy days.
Step back week this week so the legs can recover a bit. Only one long run to go but I think the weeks seem to be flying by.

    Hi Guys

I've been stalking this thread a little bit from afar over the last 6 weeks or so and ye are all doing great, well done !!!
I'm training for Cork as well would have contributed myself but I tend not to get a whole lot of time to post at work so generally come on for a quick look once or twice a week.
I'm following the same plan as Karenmtob and my progress seems to be quite similar.

I just did my latest LSR of 18 miles on Sat. Did it feeling comfortable in or around 3 hours. I have a 14 mile on the schedule for next week so I will probably do the Bay Run HM in Glengarriff just for a bit of race atmosphere.
The current question I have is how to approach that half marathon :

    (a) Run it like a race to see what my current half-marathon time is looking like and re-evaluate my Marathon pmp from that ?
    Or
    (b) Run the race at my PMP and see how it feels (this would be about 20 seconds slower per mile than a. above)
    Or
    (c) Run it nice and easy at LSR pace 40-50 seconds slower than a. above taking into account that there is a 20 miler to come the following Saturday.

What would your recommendations be ?

    thanks
    Chewy

IMHO race the sh*t out of it! It will bring you on more than the other 2 options. You should have plenty of time to recover for the LSR the following week... I raced the wexford half last week and did my LSR with no problems on Saturday. I couldn't enter a race and not race it. ;)

Well I am a real captain cautious about stuff like this! But I would say, if you haven't done a half marathon yet in this training cycle, go and race it. Just take it easy this week in the lead up to the HM and then take the following week easy as well. Hopefully you will be well recovered in time for your LSR. I think it's a real confidence boost to get a HM done at this stage and it does give you a good idea of your target time for Cork. I think this weekend is the last week I would risk doing a HM as anything later than that is just cutting it too fine. Best of luck with it! What kind of time were you thinking of going for?

Forgot to update last week's running which included a DNF in the BHAA kclub 10k (sore calves) :( and a pacing job in Wexford half the following day. The legs have been okay since Tuesday so everything ticking away nicely. Positive 20 miler on Saturday.

I had a head wrecking week, the thought of the 18M LSR really terrified me. Delighted I carried on and did it. Step back this week, the end is in in sight! And there I was thinking my mileage was great this week until I see NCMC's comment on her mileage!!

Two landmarks this week, my earliest ever run, starting 12 miles at 5:05am. And the first time I've logged over 200 miles in a month. Glute seems to have healed (touchwood). A really testing 14miles of PMP on Sunday.

Well done on the 18 miles Karen, you're flying now! P&D does strange things to your perception if mileage. Anything less than 50 and I feel so guilty! Will be glad to get back to running for fun after CCM!

Another week down not long to go now :).

On a side note, will be in Cork on Thursday & probably have a few hours to kill after 6pmish if anyone fancys meeting up for a run around the marina or am open to other suggestions or if anyone has a link to a garmin route around that area I'd appreciate it.
    Muchas Gracias.

I'm going to be doing my LSR on Thursday evening as I'm going on holidays on Saturday and don't want to have that hanging over my head. Plan to do 17 miles, will start at the bottom of Centre Park Road at 6-ish and do a couple of loops over to Passage West and back so would love some company! Bear in mind, I'm running a bit slower these days ;)

Did damage last week, left leg not right since Wexford half which I ran slightly injured so it's my own fault. Physio this eve again for diagnosis.

Had to cheat a bit, and did my 20m LSR this morning after work..5am start
Dawn was breaking just as a i started off, it was nice to have the roads to myself with just the birds for company. The happy feeling did not last long. Was drained pretty quickly, and if it wasn't for my pep talk to karen last week , I would have packed it in after 5 miles and gone home to bed.
    Thanks a lot Karen !!!:pac:
The race can't come fast enough for me !

Step back week for me, did I ever think I'd say a 14 mile run is my easy week! Have arrived at the most daunting week so far, 20LSR this weekend. I'm going to be positive about this for the week, nearly there now. This time 4 weeks it will be all over:).Well done MR W, glad to hear your pep talk to me, helped you through the 20 miler.
