Missed out on a run on Tuesday due to wisdom tooth extraction, that has lead to a few better nights sleep.
Easiest LSR on Thursday in the company of ncmc,If we were organised here on this we should possibly have tried to arrange one or two large group runs,it certainly makes the running easier.
Body feeling tired at the end of last week, two days rest at the end really needed, one really hard week to go(started off with a tough hill session yesterday) before the tapering starts:D

Low mileage last week, but got the LSR done 17m.
Injury still present & resting this week until it feels good again. Physio yesterday.

I've been busy, ill and injured over the last two weeks, only getting a few runs in, but back at it this week. At least I feel rested, silver linings and all that. Can't believe the marathon is nearly here, feels like I've been training for it forever. :)

Wish I had a 10K race in four weeks time rather than a marathon. Really enjoying a set of 10K time-trials I'm using as tune-up races. The plan must be working at least in terms of speed: in January I wouldn't have believed I could do 6.24miles at 6:44 pace come May. McMillan has be at 3:17 based on my 10K time. No way would I expect 3:17 but it does make me wonder if targeting 3:34.59 is a little too conservative?

Only updating last weeks mileage now as I was off work all week and the computer at home is way too slow and annoying:mad:.
Had to stop and walk on Tuesday due to a breathing problem and no inhaler with me. Missed Wednesday run due to the OH being sick. Back on Thursday though for a good hard tempo session. Saturday was 15m with 10 @ PMP. This was a tough stepback week run but glad to get the miles done on target time.
I met with a few friends for pints on Saturday afternoon and they were slagging me, calling me Mo Farah because they say I've gotten too thin. It's not long ago they were slagging me about being the fatest one when I was 4 stone heavier at 16stone so I kind of like this type of slagging. I just hope I don't drop out at halfway.
A peak of 64miles:eek: planned for this week before Taper Time.

I don't pay too much attention to the McMillan marathon times as I think you need quite a few marathons under your belt for these times to apply. It's suggesting 3.12 for me based on a recent 10k time and I'm targeting 3.25-3.30. A more accurate estimate I think is to use: double your Half Marathon time and add 10%.
I don't have a recent HM time but I'd like to think I'd target a 1.33 based on a time of 1.35 in Clonakilty in December and how I feel I've improved since then. A 1.33 half would give a full marathon time of 3.25.
    Hope this helps.

I know I've only done 39 miles last week which was a step back week but I did 56 miles the week before. Using the 10% rule I should probably do 62miles so I'm stretching it just a little bit. 4 of the 6 runs done so far this week and feeling ok apart from the usual aches and pains.

What is everyones opinion on running farther than 20miles? This weekend is my 3rd 20mile run and for the previous two I ran 15 miles easy and 5 @ MP. I was thinking of running 22 miles tomorrow at an easy pace and leave out the MP miles. I've seen this in some plans I've looked at. Is there any benefit of one over the other? I must be a bit of a masochist really as I'm looking forward to getting up at 5.30 tomorrow and tackling the 22 miles.:D I'll have the thought of a few beers in the afternoon to get me through.;)

As said above McMillan is good up to half marathon for predictions but for the full for relative novice runners it is very aggressive. I'd stick to your sub 3:35 target.

I'd suggest the 22 miler LSR. The additional 2 miles will stand to you on race day as it is after 20 that it really starts to hurt and you will have some experience of going past the 20.

I'm going to try 21.5 tomorrow too as my last LSR. This will be the longest I've ever ran (hopefully). Should I plan to do many miles at PMP?

Thanks for this. I've taken your suggested formula and put my figures in and the results are much more in line with my target sub 3:35.

my HM PB is 1:37:54 from last September, I do like to think I could take up to 2 mins off that and manage 1:35:54. Multiple by 2 and add 10% = 3:30:59. So on that basis 3:34:59 would seem a safe challenge.

This is my 5th marathon (3:51, 3:41, 3:40, 3:41), but it's the first one where I feel I've trained to a 'proper' plan. Previous plans have been Hal Higdon 'get you to the finish line' plans or makey-uppy plans. Maybe with P&D mileage in the legs I could manage sub 3:30, maybe. But if I manage 3:34:59 without blowing up I'll be happy that P&D is working for me, and then tackle sub 3:30 next time out. I'm sick of blowing up.

Last year I did a 22 miler with the last 8 miles at PMP (7:5X) pace. It was one of the best training sessions of the year. I hit my target paces and finished feeling I could have continued at PMP for another 4.2 miles. It did wonders for my confidence. I did this session 4 weeks out from my marathon and part of me still wonders if I was fully recovered on marathon day. I would say going to 22 miles is good insofar as it gives you some feel for those last 6.2 miles. But I think you're right to leave out the PMP miles.

Thanks - yeah the head is saying sub 3:35 (even though it's also saying I'm probably better prepared for this marathon than previous ones). Previous marathons, I've listened to the heart without much success.

According to the "Marathon Running Bible" (P&D) none, but as outforarun has questioned wether they were fully recovered in time for a Marathon from a similar session that your thinking about.

Thanks Doc - it seems to be the general theme okay. I'll take it easy tomorrow and see how I get on.

I realise now I basically asked the same question as out for a run a whole 1 post down the page... Fecking numpty. Sorry guys :)

Personally, i never do any of my LSR miles at MP. My midweek MP runs are more than enough for me. I've 22 miles this Sunday ( monday morning :pac:)
and here's hopin i feel better during it than last weeks one.
    ( three cheers for tapering , starting next week !! :D )

  • Registered Users Posts: 162 ✭✭Ecoenergy

Let the taper begin. 22 miles this morning and i couldn't have managed a PMP at the end if I was guaranteed a seat on winning streak tonight. Pure torture for the last 5 miles but this is probably due to the high mileage week. I thought the best recovery would be beer and wine so a little drunk now. How soon before the marathon should we give up beer. Is the night before too soon
    ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,182 ✭✭✭Beef

I was the same today eco - pure torture of a run. Kept telling myself that this was "it" - taper is coming. I'm off the beer since my ridiculous blow out at a stag weekend last weekend. 2 solid days of drinking. It will be the longest I've been off the beer since I don't know how long! I doubt you'd need to be off it too long - I'm just using the marathon taper as a break from it (and social smoking) tbh.

A tough week, missed a 5 miler on Sat , my usual excuse of weekend night shift will apply ! But LSR on Sun nite/ Monday morning was the complete opposite of last week. Felt really strong up to mile 20, then legs tightened up, was meant to do 22 but 21 to the car had to do. Thank God we're nearly there.

Great to have last week done and dusted and to get through it in one piece. 6 x 1m intervals on Monday and 3 x 3m Tempo on Wednesday really took their toll so the legs were tired starting the 22m LSR on Saturday. I had the little devil on my shoulder for the last 5 miles saying "why don't you just walk for a little bit". Have to make sure he's not around on the day.

I'm so rubbish at filling out that table. Did my third and last 20 miler on Saturday and thankfully all went well. Everything is ticking away nicely so fingers and toes crossed that everything will be okay on the day.

Absolutely thrilled to have this week done, have been dreading it since I started the plan. 21M LSR went well much better than the 18M two weeks. I was lucky again, managed to run with someone, so the miles flew by with the company, actually can't believe i am going to type this, but I enjoyed it!!

Been a few weeks since I updated. Feeling pretty good about Cork now, had a comfortable 22 mile LSR on Monday and a good 10K race yesterday. I have decided to run with the 3:45 pacers and push on at the end if I feel up to it. Have got a bit of a fright in recent weeks with hearing horror stories of people collapsing with a couple of miles to go, so want to give myself the best possible chance of finishing strong. Doesn't feel much like taper on P&D, but maybe that's a good thing as I have no nerves, taper madness or marathon dreams!

I can't feckin wait for the race day now. I just hope I stay out of trouble for 2 weeks in terms of sickness or anything like that. I finally understand the concept of taper madness. If anyone sneezes near me for the next 2 weeks I'll lose it!
    Surgical mask time. :)

Glad it's taper. Training is definitely helping my 10K pace and I'll be setting a new goal for post marathon, a sub 40:00 10K. Discovered I really like that distance. Only 9 runs to Cork!!

Felt lousey for the 13m run on Saturday which I'm putting down to not eating properly on friday. I have to remember sausages and rashers don't add a lot of carbs. Feeling good so far this week so fingers crossed it was just an off day.
I'm due to go for a few pints tomorow night with a friend home from Oz. I plan on only staying for 4 or 5 pints (promise;)) but I'm feeling a bit guilty when its only 10 days to go. I know I'll also be having a few beers at my niece's communion on Saturday. Whats everyone's opinion on drinking so close to the race?

Surely those beers are only giving you those extra carbs you need... ;)

I have no idea to be honest - I'm off it for the 4 weeks before the race, but that's more to do with my own habit of having a fag with a pint...
Whatever about having a drink, I can't be making myself any more wheezy than I will be already, panting around the course.

Ciaran O'Lionard famously was having a few beers one night in 2011 and decided to run a race the next evening. He went out and set a PB and achieved the Olympic Qualifying standard for London 2012.
Point is, a few beers in Isolation are not going to do you any harm, just keep it sensible.

(even if you are not sensible you still have over a week to get rid of the hangover ;)).
