Can anyone tell me if it's worth going up north to get braces? I'm about 1.5 hrs from Enniskillen.

Secondly, what's the average cost for getting braces on the top row?

Don't know about cost but you'll need to go back every 6 weeks to get them tightened so you should factor that into your decision

Dont bother, same price north and south if you shop around (healthcare is always best tendered to the person willing to work for least money :)), get somewhere close, you will save a fortune in fuel and time off work.

I live half an hour from the border and I'm getting mine done for around €2,600 once I claim my tax back on them. I got my wisdom teeth out in the north as the clinic I went to was quite cheap, but I'm getting my braces done in the town I live in for handiness sake. Pplus he's a really good dentist

i got mine done up north, personally i found a big differnce in price. takes me 50 mins to get there.

regardless of price i do agree go with someone you are comfortable with (reason i went with my ortho), will make all the difference.

price will depend on type of brace you want- ceramic, linguistic, metal etc

Im in the same boat as you badAngell.....
Only got quote of clear train-track braces for 2500-3000 euro and as the north is so close dunno if id be better off going up north. Has anyone any idea if 2500-3000 euro is good value for clear braces?

    All advice welcome :)

That's seems a good price, I paid 2400 stg up north, that's ceramic on top, metal on the bottom, plus follow up and retainers

It really will. As someone who never smiled, talked behind his hand a lot (so I'm told) to be called Mr Smiley by a complete stranger recently even though I still have my braces on and will have for another year it's the best decision I ever made :D

I was quoted €2,200 for metal braces on top. How does this seem? Maybe two of us could be "friends" and split the 10% discount for friends/family!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15 Ms.cutie

After meeting orthondontist yesterday, fee will be €3000 for clear/ceramic braces on top and metal on the bottom...dont mind the metal on the bottom and clear on top should be fine. but first have to get the two teeth out :( gonna be mentally prepared and hopefully will be well numbed so fingers crossed :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15 Ms.cutie

Have been thinking bout getting two teeth out and wonder could I be completely knocked out for it as dont think i can go through it even if it were numbed...im really really fretting about it :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,691 ✭✭✭Lia_lia

^ I got 4 teeth out and it was grand. Over in a few minutes. Actually got two of them out straight after I got the braces :P

No point in getting completely knocked out...that would cost a fortune. You can get IV sedation (I think it's called?) which makes you well..sedated. So you won't really know what's going on :)

tanx guys...uv all been really supportive...am really coming around to the idea of being numbed and hopefully sedated some bit!!! getting braces on end of may so wierdly enuf looking forward to that date so i can start treatment and sooner they come off then :)

Just wondering BADANGEL where did you end up going for treatment as in here or up north??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15 Ms.cutie

    Hey guys,

have been given a quote by my orthodontist and now he says ill probably need two fillings and am going to be getting two teeth out. However, this is all EXTRA on top of the braces and its another dentist in the clinic who is going to do my fillings and pull the teeth. is this the norm where I really do have to pay extra on top of my quote for all this preparation work for the braces??

bit confused and realising its gonna be more expensive than i originally thought.

    sad face!!!boo!!!

Orthos will have specialised and may be out of the loop on the best practices of general dentistry which is why they will refer you.

My wife had the same treatment, 4 teeth out and a couple of fillings and was referred back to her general dentist for the work by the ortho.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 128 ✭✭dublingirl83

Unfortunately it's true, I had to get fillings and a tooth out too prior to braces. All was done by the neighbouring dentist then back to orthodontist for braces.
All at extra cost. If possible don't let it put u off, I'm only 5 months in and difference is unbelievable.

Does anyone have any idea how much braces for the bottom row would cost? One of my bottom teeth is starting to cross the tooth next to it.

I had braces and I was quoted 6,000 blips down here for just top braces and I was told I would have to get 2 teeth taken out.

I went up north and was told it would be 2,500 pounds top and bottom, no teeth extracted.

You should get a few opinions first...and if all possible try not to have extractions. :)

You can PM if you need additional info. I had awful teeth, and the amount of crap I was told by several different orthodontists was unbelievable....

SHOP AROUND!!! Also if you are getting braces, ask them if they are going to put the bar at the back of your teeth when you get them off...I would advise on getting this bar, especially if your mouth was overcrowded to start with...so your teeth don't slip.

    One last point.....Wear your retainer!!!!!

I've had braces twice. Generally, the cost is about $2,000-$3,000. Many doctors do payment plans though, so you don't have to have the money up front. You should expect to wear your braces for about 2 years.

    Thank you

The new Damon braces are less noticeble and faster. I have them and I only have to wear them for 18 months, unlike the normal braces whihc require 24 months :p. There's a dentist south side of the river, very good service, excellent payment plan :3.

Damon braces are just a self ligating bracket, there is absolutely nothing special about them what so ever really. Braces take between 3 months to 7 years depending on the severity of the problem and the degree to which it is corrected. The time you will spend in braces will be determined totally by these factors.

Ms. Cutie, I still haven't gone ahead with braces as haven't had the money. Think I'll be getting them soon and most likely in Sligo.

I don't think I can name names here, but if you're around Quayside, it's probably the same guy and I can absolutely recommend him (I got mine on December). The prices are very good too and flexible payment, you just need an initial deposit and pay the rest off before the end of treatment.
Best of luck with them, I know its expensive, but if you're unhappy with your teeth, you'll feel so much better once they're on.

Yes, that's the place. Glad to hear you're happy! I'll make an appointment one of these days and just get it over with!

Hi, looking to get braces for my daughter, would appreciate any recommendations on orthodontists. I live in South Dublin, preferably would like to get treatment close to home. I've been to two orthodontists and got quotes of 3,500 and 4,500 for upper and lower teeth, white ones on upper. They both said her teeth are not too bad and would need the braces for about 9 months. Wondering if this seems like good prices and if anyone knows a cheaper one.
    Thanks.

Thanks for the replys, I think i'll go with the 3500 so, seems to be reasonable

Seems a bit extortionate for 9 months work. I had catastrophic teeth. Went to few orthodontists, one wanted me to have my jaw broken, quoted me something ridiculous. I ended up heading up north and getting top and bottom for 2500 pound. I had braces for 2 years.....teeth were shocking before I had braces....

Just to say, I am sure your teeth are much better now than before, but orthognathic surgery with the pre and post surgery braces is a much bigger job and would have had different results. There are plenty of orthodontist that charge less than 2500 gbp (3000 euro) for braces so long as your willing to accept compromise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 148 ✭✭dubmark74

I'm a bit confused now. one person is saying 3500-4500 is a good price, others are saying you can get it done for less than 3000. Can you send me on the details of any dentist that will do top and bottom braces for less than 3000, I tried a few and they all seemed much more expensive. Even the ones in the North were similar prices. Prefer not to go North and i'd have to drive up and down a lot.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,535 ✭✭✭btkm8unsl0w5r4

It all depends on your case. If you teeth are really crooked it will cost more, if they are not too bad it will cost less. Others peoples estimates are really not cross transferable.

The confusion arises because orthodontists dont sell braces they provide the service of straight teeth. What is necessary to do that changes from person to person. There are also now types of braces that seek to have short treatment times and not fully straighten the teeth, just enough to make the average adult patient happy. These are a bit cheaper but are not comparable to a fully course of braces. Its a confusing thing to get your head around.

I have movie star teeth now, or so I've been told. :D Shocking difference, really it is.

Can anyone tell me if it is possible just to get a top incisors and canines straightened? And if possible, could it be done with invisalign?

This sort of thing generally come in under the heading of limited objective orthodontics. This is usually shorter couses of braces that fix only the issues at the front of the mouth. Nearly all orthodontist offer this, however beware of one thing, if your suitable for this sort of treatment its great, but not fixing the back teeth (if needed) can cause serious stability issues and relapse. Any orthodontist or experienced general dentist can advice better.
