Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Is it the next biggest Russian city after Moscow and St. Petersburg.

One of the Siberian cities or something?

EDIT: Using Wikipedia Yekaterinburg? It has one team FC Ural Sverdlorvsk Oblast :P

    This should be straightforward enough:

Which former League of Ireland player scored a goal in the Confederations Cup?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,627 ✭✭✭Lawrence1895

    Was it Wes Hoolahan?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 500 ✭✭✭Jarrod

    Joseph N'do.

    Correct. Ex Bohemians.

    Main question:
Which famous former German international footballer was sacked at half-time in a game during the 90's?

    ==

As a bonus question which English second division player was also famously sacked at half-time in the 90s? (If you can name the club or the manager who sacked him then I'll give it to you also)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,721 ✭✭✭Al Capwned

Heard of a manager being sacked at half time alright, but not a player.
Cant remember who that manager was - may have read it in Four Four Two???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 500 ✭✭✭Jarrod

Bonus one is Leyton Orient. John Sitton was the manager and I can't remember the players name.

Martin Jol was supposedly sacked at half time during a Spurs match

I know there's a video of it one Youtube. After he sacks the bloke he challenges someone else to a sort out and tells him to 'bring his dinner', one of the funniest 'threatening' lines I've heard.

On a side note, does anyone else dread coming on boards and seeing that roanoke was the last poster on this thread? It usually results in a very unproductive day for me as I rack my brains for every FA Cup final and obscure football league memory I have :)

Correct on Sitton/Orient (the player was Terry Howard).

I just watched an interview with John Sitton from last year on Youtube. He never managed again after that infamous documentary aired and now drives a taxi. He speaks like a stereotypical taxi driver, lamenting the foreign influence on the British game and the millionaires wages.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,370 ✭✭✭✭Oat23

Toni Schumacher was sacked at half-time by Fortuna Köln.

Edit: I read the question again, maybe that isn't the answer :o

Famous former football-turned manager or like with the bonus question, an active player?

I watched that also, he does look and talk like a typical taxi driver.

You are correct. Harald 'Toni' Schumacher, most famous for his antics vs France at WC82.

    Bonus question from me :D
What was the name of the sporting director, who sacked him?

Anyway, Toni Schumacher went to Borussia Dortmund shortly after as a goalkeeper's coach, I met him a few times, sound lad, just a bit crazy ;)

No one really but St. Petersburg has over double the population of Paris making it the biggest with no local derby.

They don't have one either. The question was based on largest city per capita.
    Population of Paris approx 2.2m
    St Petersburg approx 4.9m

what population area are you using for that?

    paris has about 12 million

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,097 ✭✭✭roanoke

I really must brush up on my geography. I always had this idea that Paris had well over 7 million, but I guess they must be counting suburbs and metro areas etc. Very confusing to know what's what!

I'll have to brush up on this list tomorrow.

The City itself is recognised as having a population of 2.2 million. When you include the metropolitan area it would be about 12 million.

if you include the Paris metro area it's about 17 million

the urban area is about 12 million

not a trick question, but very very pedantic :pac:

but if you use the limits like that London & New York only have 8 million

No, nothing to do with being captain, but you're right insofar as it has to do with scoring goals in a particular game.

Scored in normal time and in the penalty shootout but still ended up on the losing team?

One I heard the other day:

Six players who have played in the champions league for Real Madrid and Barcelona

    Michael Laudrup

Michael Owen and Gary Lineker (and others) have done that too.
    Scored on their 100th caps?

IIRC Shearer only played around 60 games and Platini maybe 70-80?

    ==

I'll give a clue : Keane did it in the shortest amount of time (approx 30mins). Platini took around 94 minutes and Shearer took even longer.

Has it anything to do with scoring hat tricks in Stadia that are about to be knocked down or not used for internationals anymore ?

I am not allowed discuss …

I like your guess but that's probably more obscure/specific than I was thinking. To answer your question, no the stadium each player did the feat in doesn't matter (also it's not hat-trick related).

    ==

Another clue : Zidane didn't manage this feat, but probably/possibly would have if things had turned out differently.
