Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

and I'm fairly sure Wigan and Wimbeldon also

Anything to do with a player who has played for all these teams and maybe scored for them?

    Something to do with ownership?

No nothing to do with any of the above. Tell me if it's too difficult and you want more clues.

I'll add a clue: It's possible that other teams could join this list in the future, (though very unlikely, certainly in the near future).

No team has joined this list within the past couple of decades.

Certain teams will never join this list.

Teams on this list could conceivably get their names off the list (though again, this is highly improbable in the near future).

Something to do with being runners up in all divisions at one point without ever winning the top league? I doubt they all won the old first division so runners up is more likely.

Something funky like that I reckon if they can get their names off the list.

Did they all come about as the result of mergers ?

Correct fair play! (Though not all divisions, just the top).

They have all been runners-up in the top division without having won the top division.

That was a good question! Just to add, Leicester City is on that list too. (as I learnt after the answer)

Derry have, but neither Bohs nor Shels have won the Irish League. You're close, though.

Is it the Irish Cup then?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,527 ✭✭✭Paz-CCFC

Yep, the only clubs to win both the FAI and IFA Cups.

Here's one to pass the a few minutes :

Of the current UEFA countries, every one of them has had at least one of "these" except for :

Albania, Andorra, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cyprus, Estonia, Faroe Islands, Gibraltar, Iceland, Israel, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Moldova, Slovakia.

Hint : Notably even San Marino has had one.

No (I seem to remember Albania scoring a goal against England for instance)

No. (I'd imagine most countries have one of those, I think I heard of an Estonian with 150?)

A player from that nation has never won a EC/CL medal.

San Marino had a player at Juventus in the 80's (Borina or something) he won the old European Cup.

Close enough. All UEFA countries have had a player who played in a EC/CL final apart from the aforementioned.

    (Massimo Bonini)

    Here's another one :

Which retired former England international played the the vast majority of his career for just two clubs and finished with the unique record of having played the exact same number of league games for both clubs?

(edit) Hint : he has an FA Cup winners medal.

    Gazza for Newcastle and Spurs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,977 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Thats a really good question and its hard to think of many players who only played for two clubs. I thought of Phil Neville but he isn't retired yet so I'll guess at Stanley Matthews even though I know its probably not right because I've read an awful lot about him and have never come across that.

No. (although that is interesting stat for Gazza).

This guy played well over 100 for each of the two clubs with the equal appearances. Also he for much fewer clubs than Gazza.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,721 ✭✭✭Al Capwned

Think i may have misread it - Did he play for just two clubs???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,888 ✭✭✭Charisteas

Gazza did have 92 for both Newcastle and Spurs, but yeah forgot he still had 10 years of his career after Spurs :o

He played for a handful of clubs (more than two clubs, but less than Gazza). However he played the vast majority of his games for just two clubs. What makes him unique is that he played EXACTLY the same number of league games for these two clubs (well over 100 games for each).

Actually a good guess. However Walker's league totals for Forest/Wednesday, while reasonably close, don't match.

Hint : The guy I'm looking for would be less successful (although that could be argued.) and probably less famous than Walker. He certainly played fewer games for England.

Mystery Man is older. However there is several years of overlap in their careers.

Not sure if he ever played for England but Cyrille Regis? Pretty sure he won an FA Cup with Coventry.
