well the Denmark game was Eoin Hand's last and the next game was v Wales which was Charlton's first but that was 1986 not 1987

Yep, Charlton's first Ireland game was vs Wales in 86. However that is not part of the connection. In fact the Welsh player (whilst already an international player by 1986) did not play in that March 86 game vs Ireland at all. That might be a hint in itself.

Hint : I only mention "Dublin" because that's where the Dane played. It could however have been probably anywhere in Europe. Also the Welshman who did it in 87 didn't play vs Ireland at all that day. So rule out any/all Ireland connections. It just happened that vs Ireland in Dublin was one of the games in question occurred.

    So a dane v Ireland in 85
    A Welshman v unknown team in 87

ANd not likely to happen nowadays...

Yes. I'd say it would not happen in the modern era (not at least in UEFA anyway). I guess it might still happen in one of the other continental federations, but I'd be tempted to say there's rules and regulations nowadays to prevent it happening anywhere in the world .

Another Hint : Both the Dane and the Welshman went onto club management. One of the two players even went on to manage the club that was mentioned in the original question (the club they both played for).

Is it Swansea? I reckon Laudrup and maybe Hughes, dunno if they played for Barca at the same time. I still have no idea on the feat though.

EDIT: Just re-read your clue, obviously not those two then.

Note : I mentioned they played for the same club when they did this feat. This is so. However they never played for this club at the same time. The two players never played together at club level. (I might have phrased that bit poorly). Rereading the q I can see how that could have been taken two different ways.

Okay, so just to see what we have.

A Danish player in '85, in Dublin, and a Welsh player in '87 both achieved a feat unlikely to be seen again. They played for the same club at the time of the feat, but never played together. Both went into management and one of them managed said club.

    Am I missing anything?

They played for the same club, but at different times.

I think I know who the Welsh player is, purely because I know of a welsh player active at that time who did something unique, but it seems like th OP is looking for a full answer. No idea about the Dane.

That is all correct. Also I think I mentioned they never played together at club level for any club.

Why don't you say who you think it is and what they did and maybe we can come up with the Dane too. Roanoke doesn't have to say if it's right or wrong until we formulate a full answer. No bother if you'd rather not, this one is driving me mad though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,097 ✭✭✭roanoke

Osarusan if you think you know the answer then you should hazard a guess. You don't have to name either of the players to be right as far as I'm concerned.

Mark Hughes played two games in a day at some stage in his career. That's the only thing I can think of as unique, and you also mentioned that it would probably not be allowed now?

Correct! Both played for club and country on the same day :

    Mark Hughes :
On 11 November 1987 he played two competitive matches in one day: firstly he played for Wales against Czechoslovakia in Prague in a Euro 88 qualifier, and he was then driven across the border into Germany to come on as a substitute for Bayern in their 2nd round cup replay victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach.

The other player was Soren Lerby of Denmark
His commitment is attested to by the fact he chose to play two competitive matches in two different countries on a single day on 13 November 1985. First in the afternoon a World Cup qualifier with Denmark in Republic of Ireland, later in the evening a DFB-Pokal match with Bayern Munich against VfL Bochum.[1]

Moral over the story, never join Bayern or you'll play twice in a day. :pac:

Good question though and a very interesting one at that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 500 ✭✭✭Jarrod

    Okay, new question.

Since Alan Shearer in '96, eight players have broken the world transfer record fee. Name them. Bonus points for the clubs involved.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,262 ✭✭✭✭GavRedKing

    4 I can think of

Denilson to Betis from Sao Paolo ( i think)
    Crespo to Lazio from Parma.
    Zidane to Real from Juventus
    Ronaldo to Real from Utd

I think Christian Vieri is another one, to Inter from Parma.

    Buffon Parma to Juventus?

    Denlison to Betis?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,152 ✭✭✭Idu

    Figo. Barcelona to Madrid
    Ronaldo. Barcelona to Inter
    Kaka. Milan to Real

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,386 ✭✭✭✭DDC1990

Zidane, Kaka, Denilson and Christiano Ronaldo off the top of my head.

    Zidane was Juve- Madrid
Denilson was some brazillian club to Real Betis (odd one)
    Kaka Milan-Madrid
    Ronaldo- UTD-Madrid

Madrid have a few more don't they. Figo or Robinho?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 500 ✭✭✭Jarrod

Denilson (Sao Paulo to Betis), Crespo (Parma to Lazio), Zidane (Juve to Real), Ronaldo (Man Utd to Real), Figo (Barca to Real) all correct.

Vieri is correct but went from Lazio to Inter.

    Buffon is incorrect.

    2 more to get.

Kaka, AC Milan to Real is correct. One more left.

    Is there not 8?

Idu said Ronaldo (the real one) from Barca to Inter. That should be 8?

    Ronaldo x2
    Figo
    Kaka
    Vieri
    Denilson
    Crespo
    Zidane

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 500 ✭✭✭Jarrod

Yep, apologies, I missed that in his post. That's all eight then.

Which 3 teams have won the top 4 divisions in England, namely divisions 1-4 in old money.

Nope! Scored for RW Ahlen in the Regionalliga and the 2.Bundesliga then for Gladbach & Dortmund in the Bundesliga. No goals/appearances in the 3.liga.

    Hint:
Current BL player, scored in all divisions for the same club

That should narrow it down a good bit.

Must be a Fortuna Dusseldorf player. I couldn't even name one though!

Wouldn't have got it without the Fortuna Duesseldorf hint, tbh. I was too much focused on Hoppenheim

May SaulGoode open the next round :)

Maybe it has been asked before or is too easy for all you hotshots, but:

which player came on as a substitute to replace his father in an international match?

to the best of my knowledge, there is only one player who has done this.

Gudjohnsen. I believe you are right, it has only happened once.

Might be a bit easy but following up that German leagues question, who is the only player to score a hat trick in each of English football's four highest divisions, the League Cup, the FA Cup and their country?

You sure it wasn't Honved of Hungary and Dukla Prague of Czechlovakia? if so it's the away goals rule in the old ECWC in 65-66, it was a question on a radio show in England a few months ago.

Anyway here's one; what's the connection?
