Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    sendings off?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,828 ✭✭✭gosplan

Thought sendings off too but no way were there 28 in one world cup.

    Not draws either.

    penalties awarded??

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,097 ✭✭✭roanoke

I'd say Red cards is correct. Remember '06 is the WC where 4 guys were sent off in a single game between Portugal and Netherlands.

Was there a significant change to the rules between 86 and 90?

Red cards doubled yet same number of matches.

The 'professional foul' law came into effect prior to that World Cup. Before then I believe you could just hack a guy down who was through on goal or commit a deliberate handball and all it was was a free-kick. I'd imagine that law change might explain a few of the reds anyway.

I think it may have been down to generally 'negative' tactics employed by many teams in 1990. The likes of Cameroon kicking lumps out of the Argies or ourselves taking the p1ss with backpasses and hoofing it down field. I think it was after this WC that FIFA brought in the backpass rule and started rewarding 3 points for a win to encourage more attacking, 'positive' football.

Also, half the knock out games went to extra time in 1990, meaning more time for players to get booked, and when you're in extra time it's easier to kick someone down rather than chase after them.
