Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Does this thread have the format where the first person who correctly answered the previous question is supposed to ask the next one? Apologies if so.

Who were the first League of Ireland side to qualify for the group stages of a UEFA competition? (It wasn't Shamrock Rovers)

Nope. Good guess, though, based on their recent European success.

I know Bohs were in the group stage of the first Intertoto in the mid90s (but so were about 50 other teams). Do you count that as qualifying?

Yeah, that's what I had in mind. The 1995 UEFA Intertoto Cup. The group stages were the first round, but they still had to qualify through the league. Rovers were the 4th LoI team to make it to the group stages of a UEFA competition.

Good guess, to be fair. City did make the group stages of the Intertoto in 1997, and were the 3rd LoI team to do so. Sligo qualified the year before.

For your own question, I'd take a complete guess at Liechtenstein, because FC Vaduz didn't retain the cup for the first time in ages.

    It's a place as in a building, not a place as in a district/city/town.

Arsenal Football Club is named after The Royal Arsenal, a building in the London district of Woolwich.

    Yes :D

But statss was almost certainly referring to the question which was asked earlier in the thread about which clubs aren't named after places.

Arsenal is named after a place - The Royal Arsenal building in Woolwich which technically is a place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,276 ✭✭✭batistuta9

port vale was a place too, it just can't be found on maps anymore. I think it is

also Arsenal are named after the Royal Oak pub & the Arsenal ammunitions factory, they were founded as Dial Square

Who scored a hatrick against Liverpool at Anfield in a league game around the same era, early to mid 90's?

    You're nearly right.

They were named after the Woolwich Arsenal Armament Factory which was also known as Royal Arsenal. The Dial Square name came from the sundial on top of the entrance to that factory.

The pub has nothing to do with the name, that was just the meeting place of the 'Dial Square' players/workers when they came up with the new name of the club - Royal Arsenal.
