Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

For the first time in 17 years, no British team is playing in the Quarter Finals of the Champions League.

But, that said, was it that clear-cut? Not really.

Barring the implosions of both Chelsea and Manchester City at the group stage, the other British teams acquitted themselves well at the group stage. Celtic had the biggest story of the lot; they came close to beating Barca in the Camp Nou before finally beating them in Parkhead. United and Arsenal progressed without too many issues.

In the knockout stages, Celtic went out with a whimper rather than a bang, unfortunately. But despite that, they have a wonderful story to tell and a magic few nights that their supporters will never forget.

Last week and tonight, the two remaining English representatives both went out, but how tantalisingly close they both came. Arsenal were one goal away from beating a much fancied Bayern side and United came away on the wrong side of a red card decision that rocked them to their core.

There are a lot of "could haves", "what ifs", "if onlys" and so on involved for English/British teams this season in the Champions League, but I have little doubt that next season the Top 4 of the EPL (United and City are nailed on certs to be up there; Chelsea, Spurs, Arsenal and Everton are slugging it out for 3rd and 4th, with possibly Liverpool getting a sniff of it) will be more than up for the challenge.

The team that has the most to prove on the European stage next season from England is Man City. Their two visits to the Champions League saw them exit at the group stage both times. Their second season saw them placed in the absolute worst group of death ever; the Group of Champions. The league champions from 4 European Leagues (English, German, Spanish and Dutch) in the one group. Any team would have struggled in that group.

But they will have a huge point to prove next season, and I feel that they will.

English club football had something of an annus horribilus this year in the Champions League. But that said, a European trophy could still find its way to England anyway. These things happen in football. Next year, English clubs will not fare so badly.

    Ouch!

Its the width of a post, the hight of a foot, the eyes of an assistant ref. The margins are so tight to call time on a league in Europe is foolish. That said you'd wonder if City will every be as good as they ought to be under Mancini, Arsenal are ever more depleted and almost certainly will not be in the competition. As for Chelsea who the hell knows right now? However a year this may all look a bit silly. None of the problems currently afflicting the likely top 4 is that deep rooted, its not like they are about to go bust or have to sell to survive. Just a few new heads - but the right ones and the Prem will be back.

I think the English Clubs got blessed with Horrible draws in this years Champions League, Man City though should have least made the europa league with there group no excuse for not beating Ajax twice

Man United went out to a good Real Madrid side , and should have the tie wrapped up at half time in the 2nd leg,

Arsenal (who i support) we've been rubbish all season and still came within an asses roar of knocking out the mighty Bayern Munich without ever playing that well over two legs

I think this is proven by the likes of Galatasary and Malaga making the 1/4 finals , theres always one or two because of the nature of the competition , Was it last season a team from Cyprus made the 1/4 finals , But thats the nature of the competition

Chelsea were an anomaly this season the same squad that squeezed there way to the trophy last season failed to make it out of a group with Shaktar and Juventus with an even better squad..Was it not for the manageriel rubbish that goes on there , They should have came through that group easily enough, Shaktar are not the team people make them out to be at all

And in the Europa League Spurs are looking dead certs to win it in my view with Newcastle having a great result in Russia to take home I think all this English teams are fooked crap is a bit over the top
