The process to select Ireland's top greyhounds of 2012 is due to take place on Monday, though the identity of the winners will not be revealed until the presentation gala on Sunday, March 10.

There is a category for 'Juvenile/Newcomer of the Year' which will be added to the existing awards for dog, bitch, sprint, marathon, brood bitch and stud dog as well as the Hall of Fame and Special Merit awards.

Everyone will have their own ideas regarding the greyhounds of the year, but it will be a surprise if there isn't at least one bone of contention when the winners are announced.

The presentations will take place for a second year at the Hodson Bay Hotel in Athlone.

    MINISTER COVENEY’S POSITIVE ADDRESS
    12/03/2013
Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney graced the National Greyhound Awards with his presence on Sunday afternoon and he made a very positive impact on the occasion.
The greyhound portfolio is normally the property of the Junior Agriculture Minister but that position hasn’t yet been filled following the untimely and unfortunate death of Shane McEntee. At a late hour the Minister announced his intention to attend the function and his presence added greatly to the occasion.
Freed momentarily from the agriculture shackles, the Minister spoke for up to twenty minutes without once referring to notes and his knowledge and insight into the greyhound world was both surprising and hugely encouraging.
Not a man to mince his words, the Minister pledged his own and the Government’s support for the Greyhound Industry and assured all that this support will continue. However he did say that his department will be closely monitoring the industry’s performance but complimented Chairman Phil Meaney and Chief Executive Adrian Neilan on their performances to date.
All in all it was a very satisfactory occasion on Sunday afternoon in the Hodson Bay Hotel in Athlone when, apart from the main canine awards, the highlights were the receptions given to Hall of Fame winner Fraser Black and Special Merit recipient Jackie Devine.
I had the pleasure of sharing a few “bevvies” with Fraser, wife Paula, daughters Joyce and Gillian and a few of their friends afterwards and it brought home how much this honour means to people who have dedicated their lives to the greyhound industry.
