Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

No late entries as far as I can tell. The draw will probably look something like the sample one that Colm Daly has on the irishchesschampionships.com site. Really looking forward to this event now, though a bit apprehensive at the same time. Its a commitment in terms of time and effort so just hoping I wont bomb.

Don't worry Rory, Colm has the draw for round 2 up http://www.irishchesschampionships.com/pairings-and-results.html
No upsets in round 1, you're off to a flying start :D

The Irish Women's Championship has already started - it's a 6-player all-play-all with Gearóidín Uí Laighleis and Diana Mirza the favourites - they will be playing in the last round.

Been checking ulchess.com all night for any results or games allright :D I figured if they could broadcast the top eight tables in the main championships, they could use the kit to do the same for the women's championships...

Today's games were played in a different building - the electronic boards are all set up and tested in the venue which will be used from tomorrow on.

    Live Games are here: http://icu.ie/misc/games/live/Irish%20Championships%202013/tfd.htm

Not so sure about Colm's choice of opening. That bishop is sure to be missed.
But then he is double my rating and then some, so perhaps he knows what he's doing

I'd imagine Ciaran does too ;)

In fact, looking at what stockfish thinks of it so far, it looked to be going Ciaran's way up to move 36....

    261453.png

It doesn't think much of Ciaran's castling at move 12 mind you, and then it thinks Colm missed a trick with 13. h3 (it much prefers d5 at that stage). But the game's not over yet, and they're several moves past move 36 by now...

The full stockfish analysis of that game:

    261499.png

    261500.png

Stockfish seems to think it was actually salvagable for Colm up to 40.Nc4, but after that, not so much.

I thought I would have an ok position after 13 d5 Bb4 - I didn't see the idea of white playing Ne4 with the idea of Qxd7 and a knight fork on f6.

I also completely forgot about the extra 30 minutes after move 40 - it was great to suddenly see my time go from 2 minutes to 32 minutes.

It's a great venue for the tournament - plenty space, free coffee, good weather ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

It didn't look too bad even if stockfish didn't like that move Ciaran, it still thinks you pretty much had the game consistently after that point.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 444 ✭✭brilliantboy

Rory has Philip Short in a very difficult position. I think it's only a matter of time.
And it looks like the Martin Crichton - Colm Daly board may have malfunctioned?

btw nice analysis Sparks, certainly a notch above a bog standard game score

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

Thanks BB, I've been tweaking scid-vs-pc's LaTeX output, that graph's about the most obvious change. I'm going to try to do those for each game, but I'm having some minor pc problems at the moment.

Either today's games have been remarkable or something's gone awry with the live boards :(
Mad times on some of the games - Philip Short on 6 minutes to Rory Quinn's 1hr 10 at move 19? And some matches only on move 3 while others are on move 24.

But Freeman's game against Hughes looks like it ended on a painful blunder...

Well Short was in a fairly dangerous position from the get-go so I can understand him taking his time.
Rory now on 2/2 will I'm sure be thinking "why not me?"

And re the Hughes-Freeman game, it's always kind of nice to see even strong players can be prone to a moment of madness

It looks like he took too much though :(

True. I have this printout I keep handy here showing that kind of thing being done by people like Karpov, Fischer, Petrosian and Bronstein, just for morale when I make a headbanger of a blunder. I tend to reread it a bit too often mind... :D

Crichton-Daly ended after nine moves from a hardly-lost postion without a single pawn or piece off the board? What's going on down there today?

I think Crichton-Daly was the only board on which there were broadcast problems. I didnt see much of the game so cant really comment but at a glance it looked quite messy, Colm eventually won. Not sure what happened to Gordon in his game, he must have just had a blindspot.

2395 performance rating will probably be a bit of a disappointment though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

Would the one loss being to a GM not be the bigger disappointment to him? I would have thought a GM scalp was a big reason for him to go to e2e4?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,265 Mod ✭✭✭✭cdeb

Well the one is a symptom of the other. But I'm sure he'd have taken 4/4 and a loss against a GM if it meant a couple more rating points. 2500 is the all-important barrier (plus a final norm). Who the results come against doesn't really matter. He's played and beaten GMs before; of itself, it's probably no different to me beating a 1700.

some of the games and results don't make sense here . look at ray orourke game against killian delaney's . black's 38 move and rest of moves after that are all illegal. how did philip foenander lose to cecil sloan from a clear winning psoition ?

Ray resigned at move 38 - if the players move the pieces after the end of the game then this is picked up by the system.
