Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Mid Life Crisis! Its all ahead of ya!!!

Re - The Gixxer, I had a Honda Super 400 for a year previous so had 1 years NCB on switching, and it was valued at 4k at the time.

Re - The 883, I'd imagine the demographic of buyer is people like me, Being the cheapest bike in their range by a long way youd think they would be fairly friendly ins wise but if stats are saying 40± is high risk so be it.

Training and test for me then. Anyone tried calling about the Ninja 300?? Looks like a good all rounder.

Liberty won't insure you on a CBR 125 until your 18. Already been there, they refused me because I'm not 18. Your only route is AON or Carol Nash, and they aren't cheap.

    Cost for me:

    Bike - €750
    IBT - €300 (Roadskill waterford)
    Theory test - €45 (I think)
    Insurance - €717
    Learner permit etc... - €60
    PPE - €400

It was costy but well worth it, if you have the money it's a thing to think about.

Seriously though, the CBR does look nice but even just for a year try something different, a varadero, tdr, ybr, cg, nsr 80, all lovely bikes.

    Best of luck!

Unfortunately owing and running a bike isn't a cheap hobby or mode of transport. I have symphony with young guys getting into biking with the advent of this expensive and ott IBT and feel it'll put any young person off getting a bike so am delighted to read this post and hear that there's still new blood joining us on two wheels. Like the OP I started at 16yrs old and have now been riding 26yrs - it was one of the best decisions I made in life. Ive owned some awesome machines, met some great people and toured all around europe on my bikes as well as constantly teaching myself new skills.
As I said don't think it's cheap - on top of your usual costs you've already listed take into consideration tyres, chain & sprockets etc etc, as bikes eat up consumable parts but as someone said earlier buy yourself a Haynes manual and learn how it all works yourself - when something comes loose at midnight on a country road you've got to know how to fix it! On the plus side, clothing/ helmets have come down big time in price over the years and there's lots of good bargains online - buy the best gear that you can afford don't scrimp on this!!
Although the IBT is a rip-off it's a great concept, take further training as it'll make you a better and safer rider and play it by the book. Work towards your full test and get it out of the way as soon as you can.
All the hassle and expense is definately worth it!
Ps. What I would have given at 16 or 17 to own something like a CBR125!!
