    Hi All

I'm looking for a recommendation for a good dentist in the Dublin area - I live in Dublin 4 and work in Dublin 3, but I'd be willing to travel a little to get a good dentist. When I was in school I had a dentist who was less than "desireable" (for want of a better word!) so I still find it difficult to trust dentists. So I want somebody who I know I can trust 100%

I think it may be against forum rules to post this info in the forums, so feel free to PM me

    Thanks in advance

I'm looking for a dentist that would perform a good crown at a FAIR price.
Right now, I've no idea what a fair price is

I know Irish dentists and foreign dentists differ in priceI've read this, but I thought the prices were broadly similar now
Certainly these threads suggest so http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057210148 and http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056728302

So how do i know I'm getting good value for money from Dublin dentists?
In other words are their materials better or worse - I'm no different after reading this (http://www.dental-picture-show.com/dentists-crowns/a-dental-crowns-types.html) as the dentists don't state the percentage noble metal in their crowns on their websites :(

Sorry there poster, no names allowed although I appreciate the work you put into the post maybe reformat without names. The main factor in how good a crown is, is not necesdsarly in what it is made of but the preparation of the tooth, the impression, the fit of the final crown, and the artistry and skill in the laboratory in manipulating the material chosen. I have seen good crowns and bad crowns in all materials. The dentists and the lab they choose are far more important factors.

Okay. first not sure why i can't quote the fees from the different sources once i give a URL for those fees. But i accept that Boards.ie might have a policy around that so i'll respect it.

But while what you've said makes sense, it also does not help me in making the decision, of what dentist to go to. If I understand you, it is like a lottery, you can never know a good dentist from a bad dentist in advance or a good price from a bad price. I just have to pick any dentist and fingers crossed I won't have problems further down the line. Jaysus, they are no better than car mechanics....

We dont allow names or links to clinics, if you want to maybe put in dentist 1 and dentist 2 etc that would be fine. I appreciate that you not going to make a big deal out of this long standing rule on this forum.

Like everything you can go on reputation. Not self generated internet reputation but recommendations from family, friends and others. There are also specialists in each area of dentistry and that will give you some indication of a particular talent in an area. Generally better dentists charge more, why....because they are better. Do bad dentist sometimes charge more...yes. Do good dentists sometimes charge less....yes. Look at examples of the dentists work, website usually have pictures for you to look at. Go for a consultation and get a vibe. Its like picking a doctor or a surgeon you go on the recommendation of friends, family and other professionals. If you go on price alone you become a consumer of an item, suceptable to sales gimicks and easily manipulated. If you take a more sophisticated view you become a patient and get a service. No surgeon would expect you to know what material a medical implant is made out of, and you don't make a choice of dentist based on what materials they use, no more than you choose a carpenter based on the brand of screws they favor. Results are what matter. Choose the correct dentist and it will all fall into place.

thanks Simon Gifted Streamer, it makes perfect sense in theory, although in the example of a carpenter if they used chipboard instead of plywood, it would tell you a lot about how they cut corners. Likewise, in electronics, cheaper providers tend to use cheaper components, so once they use or say they use similar materials it does tell you a lot.

I'm in the unfortunate position where friends and family just go to their local dentist, well because they are local. If you ask is the dentist good, the reply will be - well he's local. As regards asking work colleagues, no-one is going to say their dentist is bad, because they know the first question from others is; why do you go there then...
As regards getting a vibe from a website, yes maybe, but I'm sure some of the older generation of dentists have no interest in paying someone to do their websites, while younger less experienced dentists might. So if I base my decision on that it could be very misleading.

I need treatment that could cost a month's salary or two. IN MY OPINION there is no obvious way of really knowing a good one from a bad one, like you could a hotel judging on its star rating or tripadviser.

I think i will base my decision on price once I'm comparing like-for-like in terms of the materials used, but ALSO I will check how long they have been in business for. I'm going to go with Abraham Lincoln:
You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.
If they've been in business 30 odd years for example, they must be doing something right:cool: There was one in Newry that was open for donkey years if memory serves me correct, and they were only 2/3 of the price down south, so I'll start there ;)
But I think i will get only one crown done first to see how it looks, then the others if I'm impressed.
