newspaper allegations of inappropriate behaviour with priests

would have resigned at 75 anyway in a few weeks time

standing aside , won't be voting for the pope

only UK cardinal who could have voted for pope, 3rd Scottish cardinal since reformation etc.

The Vatican has said it will look into claims that Britain's most senior Roman Catholic behaved "inappropriately" towards four priests in the 1980s.

Cardinal Keith O'Brien strongly contests the allegations, which were made in Sunday's Observer newspaper.

There seems to be a high proportion of gay men in the priesthood, don't see what the attraction is.

given the timing , how likely is it to be a hatchet job ?

'suppose it's like the cop with a week to retirement

At what point does it stop becoming a pristhood and start becoming a gay club?

    Chaps would be an indicator.

For a lot of men, it's an easier way to deal with being gay than coming out. Especially if they're quite religious already, and would have moral problems with the fact that they're gay.
They join the priesthood, take a vow of chastity, and problem solved. (In theory of course)
That's my take on it anyway..

When they're still wearing black with a white collar, except it's made from leather and the collar has spikes.

And no ones going to question why a grown man has willingly given up a sex life with the opposite sex, under any other circumstances this makes you a bloody weirdo,as a priest your admired for it(used to be anyway)

Also, a person with peadophilic tendencies would be attracted to the priesthood, there was enormous respect for priests back in the day and it was the perfect setup to abuse. Nobody would believe that the priest would be abusing.

There's no question of paedophilia here, simply 'imappropriate actions with other men.'

    Don't blur the two!

Yes, a convenient interview last week knowing that by the time this story broke he would have resigned .

    Yes

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

But wasn't there something about 'innapropriate actions'?

Oh look, another homophobe isn't exactly practicing what he preaches. Nothing new here apart from how senior he is!

Pretty extreme if all you want is to meet more gay men.

If you're a RC cardinal especially one that makes an issue out of homosexuality, then what he's accused of would be 'inappropriate actions' .
