I finally did it! I finally got my first Arcade cabinet! Been wanting one for years, considering building, saved up, blown savings, and in the end the better half got it for me for Father's Day :D

It needs a bit of work but I picked this up a few hours ago from Mitch
I hope to get some more pictures up when its cleaned up and fixed up.

P.S. I discovered my house is not cab friendly. I JUST got this in my house (not without taking a small chunk out of the door)

    Absolutely class! Well done!

Any idea what the plan is for it? Going to turn it into a dedicated single game cab or turn it into a MAME shooting jobby?

I'll try and get the basic game in it up and running correctly. This is also my chance to get far better acquainted with the internals of a cab as there is some work needed on it. :)

I can almost definitely see it becoming a mame shooter eventually but that will probably be a slow process.

Cleaning time for the next few hours though!

Never been this keen on cleaning products before

One of the two mini cabs I got from Enternow(the other, more complete one is in storage in my mams)
I reckon its going to need to be gutted and Ipac/vga monitor/MAME'd.
from what I can tell it was a Polaris cab originally.. it has original logos etc on the controls (and a Taito badge on the back) , and was converted to something else ..(the PCB's gone so no idea what).Whats weird is that a Polaris mini looks a bit different from this ...its a mystery!

Nice one Dr. Bob. Fantastic to see you finally in the arcade club :)

Regarding the cab, I'd say they're generic Taito minis and this one was running Polaris.

Seem to be fairly uncommon. When they originally turned up I spent ages searching online to find more info but didn't come across any. Only thing I came across were Taito 'Trimlines'

Nice work Bob, only info i have on them is they came form a barn in cork! One of the lads on Jamma+ told me they are Taito minis so thats why i labeled them as that originally.. they may not be for all i know! If your looking to see where they came from you can check it out over on my site if you havent seen it already. http://www.gamersireland.ie/

Very impressive is the shoe horning of a two player CP on there.
Is that or did somebody go at it with a a hole saw?

Not exactly a "get" but I "got" Mame audio working from the laptop through the Atomiswave cab. In Stereo! In this method it obviously bypasses all the cab circuitry and connects to the speakers directly as the audio can still be heard when the cab is switched off but mame still running!

Here is a quick hook up vid. I apologise in advance for the dirty cab and the very low audio. The baby was asleep when I tested this so couldn't have the audio too loud. Unfortunately it wasn't loud enough for the phone to pick it up when recording.

the 2nd joystick is actually fitted in the fire button hole! 80's arcades were totally into cannibalizing cabs, Im just grateful it wasnt a 4 player cab by the time it got to me;)

cheers I was re-reading the entry on gamersireland last night! mad stuff!
I dont think they're mini's (its actually quite wide!), and they're not trimlines. The angle the monitor is at versus the control panel is really weird and not something I've seen much of so God knows what kind of Taito cab it is.
by the way before I end up junking something that may be useful to someone..

have a look at that vid about a minute in.
Newbie question: if theres no game PCB's in the cab, anyone know what are the 2 boards fitted to the sides?!

Mine is a butchered amp from a set of JBL active speakers.
The amp is wired into the same connector as you, the P connector, a six prong connection despite only four being used.
That is soldered into the amp.
The speakers were powered by a conveniently 12v power supply, so I cut the 12v plug/transformer off and Kerbdog wired the resulting cable and plug directly into the cab transformer, at the appropriate pin.
As a result I get lovely stereo sound from all the games, and it's only active when the cab is powered on.

Kerbdog has pointed out that the transformer is a EU one, and can switch between 110v and 220v, the monitor appears the same.
A bit more research and we should be able to dispense with the stepdown altogether.
Then all I'll need is an ATX power supply that is activated by an incoming current, meaning I can pop the PC into the space available in the cab and not have to turn it on directly when I switch on the cab.
Also, I'll have to replace the PC, just doesn't have the horses when it comes to the CAVE stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,922 ✭✭✭TechnoFreek

Cidey, double check if the monitor is dual voltage. I enquired before about mine and I was told it was 100V only.

I was thinking along the same lines as you to get rid of the stepdown.

Be interested to see you pc power on solution too when sorted. I have a mix of boards and mame so wont need the pc to always come on.

Kerbdog is researching the matter.as we speak.
The manual indicates that it is dual voltage but much checking, and possibly prayers, will be completed before plugging it into the local power supply!

Open the back of the cab. I think there is a sticker on the monitor too.

I got one of these off Keith myself. Did some research on them but still didn't find anything really solid on what exactly they are(have a few schematics and manuals for what I think the cab is which i can send on to you if you like). My cab powers up and the game loads but it still needs a lot of work (which should be fun).

I'm think of turning it into a little shmup machine (non mame) :)

I think those boards are part of the really old type psu that those cabs use. Modern power supplies are an all in one unit, but those classic type ones span several boards afaik.

Or maybe they are part of a game board set and the mainboard is missing?

This is what the inside of my cab looks like. It has a game board as well as what I assume is a similar PSU to Dr Bob's one.

its similar to that (I still need to drill out the coin door lock to get in there , but looking down with the plexiglass removed shows the same 2 weird boards).
like I said I'll be stripping it out and I'd be afraid I was dumping game PCBs
Steve can you send us on a link to what you have? like I said I'd love to know what kind of cab these actually are..

I thought this was the same cab used for Crazy Climber . Seems to be different though.
Still, the attached PDF's might be useful as well as the below links.

You guys are going to have so much fun restoring those cabs, well done!
I smell a dedicated Robotron cab myself!

Best of luck with it Bob, here's a pic of the one I picked up off Keith, its in the process of getting restored (very slowly!!), but it is up and running, both sticks and all buttons working, have new perspex for the cp, just haven't bothered drilling it out yet and I have cut a new mdf door and spray painted (off in the pic) it black, plan on putting back the original coin mechs, albeit disconnected.
You might be surprised, if you get a new monitor (13" I think) and chassis (that's the board hanging on the back inside wall) you could be up and running quickly. Just make sure the neck of the new monitor fits with the neck board connected, on mine I have less than an inch between the neck and the back of the cab.
Word of warning though...this hobby gets addictive and expensive very quickly!!:D

So no pics yet but got a few JAMMA boards from Mitch in a moment of madness when I was picking up another MVS board for work...don't even have a Supergun or the JAMMA adapter wired to my Naomi cab at the mo so might be knocking over to Ciderman to test :)
    - CPS2 mobo & Super Street Fighter 2
    - Final Fight (I think)
    - Some old ass Atari game
    - and another 1~2

I also now have 2 not so working MVS boards, will see if i can repair those so they might be for sale soon enough

Nice stuff mozie - is mamoru not a twin stick shooter? I have the 360 version which I seem to recall was.

As far as I know twin stick support was added as an option in the console ports (havent played either tbh), arcade version controls pretty much same as zero gunner, left stick moves/rotates and 2 fire buttons 1-regular 2-special

The naomi I picked up of JackBurton on here last year I think, its had a new chassis, been chopped, re-sprayed/polished, new speaker grills, nos marquee, nos stickers and a few other bits. Once ya get the bug at all your in trouble lol. Trying to find room for a 3rd at the moment, but herself says its a no go unless I build a shed outside which I'am seriously considering doing over the summer :)

Ahhh, nice to see Jack Burton's cab was kept in the A&R family :)

I remember that had some pin cushioning going on or something along those lines? Just needed a new chassis? Nice one.

Sounds like you've done some amount of work to it. They look far nicer chopped IMO, Pretty much turns them into a NNC.

Good luck with the shed idea if you go for it. Just make sure it's easily accessible for driving cabs :D

Picked them up from Craig at Giz10p, doesent have any in stock at the moment, just need to keep an eye out as they come in fairly often, was around €80 for the leg decals if I remember correctly, the other bits were picked up cheaper over on ao.

I have a few top o the range sharp machines and HP MFP's in work.
I'm actually gonna print off a few Move strips and 100 yen stikers when Im back from Holliers in two weeks
I've previously printed of some SF4 CP move strips and they look good after a bit of trial and error, disregarding the normal grade paper I printed them on.
