I always considered it a myth but I recently as six months ago lost a flash drive to ejecting it while it was still running something (I had an image on it still loaded up in photo gallery). As a result, the drive died.

And by eject, I mean I yanked it out.

If you yanked it without checking it with Eject first (which is basically just a stupidity filter for unplugging flash drives) it's possible it killed the drive.

And by stupidity filter, I mean that I derped out.

I think it might just be locked. Wasnt running when taken out. Could it be locked or somethin

Not realistically. Its probable that the drive got fecked from the lack of ejection. I don't know of a way to un-feck it

How could that happen?? Its all plug and play now so it shouldnt

ON a usb drive ,you need to click icon,in system tray,remove/eject usb device,
or else shut down pc,otherwise theres a risk of damage to the files.

See does it show up,in control panel, admin, management, storage ,as an empty drive.
PLUG and play refers to usb device that will be detected ,drivers installed ,
automatically on,windows pcs, eg monitors, usb devices etc
My usb drives are detected, but i still need to remove device each time i use them.
I forgot once, and lost a few files on a usb drive, but drive is still working.
click small icon arrow to show hidden icons in system tray, on the lower right of the screen.
Some usb drives have a switch, read ,write ,mode on , off.

Could possibly have corrupted the partition table for the memory stick.

I've had sticks write lock before by themselves after careless ejection.

Use the HP formatting tool to force erase and format.

But if it doesn't register on the computer HP tool won't find it.

    SEE http://gparted.sourceforge.net/download.php
in my experience if this cant detect the drive,or see a partition
the drive is dead, cannot be fixed, formatted.
It runs from live cd, boots from cdr ,cdrom drive.
you should be able,to format it, make new partition ,takes 4 minutes to load from cd.
USE imburn to burn image, iso file.
