US Dollar account?

I have some shares from my company's employee share purchase scheme which I plan to sell to help fund our holiday to America this year. When the shares are sold they generate a dollar amount and there is an extra charge levied to have the cheque issued in Euros.

A colleague tells me that it's possible to open a dollar account here to avoid losing out on foreign exchange rates and commissions, and which can then be used in the US for withdrawing money.

Are such accounts available to personal customers?
What sort of fees are charged?
The amount I envisage putting through the account this year is around $3k. Would the account fees involved be likely to wipe out any saving made by keeping the funds in the one currency?

    Thanks.

I know to open a Stg account you need a minimum balance of £10K to do so.  Am sure it is similar with USD.
