Actually you can quite easily jailbreak an iphone, wipe the OS, reinstall and it will work perfectly, on any network.

Might I suggest you get a free app like Prey (www.preyproject.com) in the future? You can track where your phone is even if it is turned off, turn on the camera and see what it is seeing, and lock it down so it cannot be turned on without a code all remotely though a web interface.

It's dead handy and works like a treat.

I know a couple of people managed to track their phone down with apps like Prey. Not much use now but really handy.

Network unlocking is not the same things as IMEI blacklisting which the network would have done when it was reported stolen. When it is blacklisted no Irish network will accept a connetion from that phone ever again.
