Waivers and disclaimers

Not looking for advise, just curious. My son had to sign and get one of his parents to sign a waiver for a race he wants to do.

Looking at it, it says that we waiver the right to sue in the event of injury even if its as a result of the organisers negligence.

Can the organisers avoid being sued in this way if their negligence causes a serious accident ?
