I originally posted this on the windows section but seems I think it would be more suited here so if a mod could close/delete that thread please. Really sorry.

Can someone help me ASAP start my brothers laptop. Idiot has no virus protection and his windows defender has been showing an error for yonks. He was downloading a movie and battery ran out.
Need to do some homework for tomorrow.

    It's a hp 620 on win 7
I've tried starting in safe mode but its not an option (f8)
I've tried with charger and without
When it starts it just goes to a blank screen or if you press escape you get the pic below.

    Video of booting:Heres what happens
I hope that link works. I'm on my phone and it doesn't support the flash so idk

    Please help.
    Thanks

    Really sorry for the repost.

Try HP recovery option if that doesn't work do you have a Win 7 repair disk? If so boot off that and see what happens.

Well, did you run the diagnostics (F2)?

I don't have the repair cd. What should I run in diagnostics? I'm not good on laptops. I've put the start up test now

IF you use recovery option, it formats disk, erases everything,

IF YOU want to copy, music, data, from drive ,
use a livecd,eg mint 32bit,fits on 1cdr,boots from cdr disk.
    DOWNLOAD,
    http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=44 32bit version.
BURN ISO image to cdr, boot from cd,use Imgburn to burn iso, image file, at 2x speed.
put cd in laptop, reboot, it has file viewer, webrowser built in.
install to drive c,if theres 5gig free space, or run from cd.
    try safe mode,again, REBOOT hold f8,for 15seconds.
IF you copy data to usb drive,do a full scan, its likely to have 1 or more virus, es .
INSTALL avast antivirus, turn on firewall when you get it working.
MAYBE Borrow a win7 cd,same version as he has,eg win7 home, pro etc
    try R repair windows option.

    TRY hardisk,test, memory test,
Maybe start up test ,then exit.
if theres no valuable data, its best to use recovery mode, formats disk, installs win7 os.

AS there maybe lots of virus,es ,malware, on drive c.

reboot PRESS f11 ,to get to recovery ,install win7 from hidden partition
    mode.
    This formats drive,erases all files.

I would try running a long hard disk scan if you get the option. It could be something simple like a corrupted bootloader. Do you get as far as a "startup repair" stage?

I'm currently running the hard disk test. What do you mean by the startup repair stage?

You could remove drive, open 2screws, put drive 2.5inch caddy ,into
    caddy sat,cost 10 euro.
Do not touch pcb, underneath drive.hold hd by the sides.
    See
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=io_7gGET6zQ
if hd has metal frame ,round it,don,t lose the 4 screws,
You,ll need frame to reinstall hd inside the laptop.

i think he means, the process whereby windows trys to fix bootup files ,to load windows.
Probaby as part of the START UP TEST,
    process ,in the diagnostic, menu.

IF YOU are copying files, folders make sure you do a full virus scan, complete scan,
especially if they are being copied to another ,pc, or usb drive.

Basically when the system POSTs it will attempt to load Windows, so after the bios screen. Windows has an inbuilt Startup Repair function that tries to repair machines with booting issues :) ,

IF I CANT load a pc, into windows, safe mode ,its usually because,
    various bootup files are deleted,damaged by virus,es ,2 or 3 virus,es
assuming hardrive is still working ok.
