as a rule, if you look back at the winners of the triumph hurdle,it doesnt bode too well for our conor. its a very tough race for 4yr olds, and can knock the stuffing out of them. theres not a lot of triumph winners who went on to major glory. i hope, obviously, i am wrong about our conor, because racing needs horses like him in the game.

I assume the above is a joke, or am I missing something. I for one never claimed to be a thousand euro punter and only would go into hundreds (max I've ever done was 300) on the rare occasion.

The triumph is a fundamentally different race than what it was 10 years ago.

Countrywide Flame and Zarkandar improved 15lbs and 19lbs from their 4 year old season.

If Our Conor replicates anything like that, he is the one they all have to beat.

I would be surprised if that performance took much out of him, he seemed to do it handy enough as he had far too much class for them.

Given he was pretty much on the bridle most of the way round and was merely driven out for spectacle purposes id expect the above isn't a worry for our conor.

He could improve more than that, he was going so easy it was crazy.

RP ratings gave Our Conor 164 AFAIK

They rated the Champion Hurdle winner 173, interestingly the highest in the last 10 years

They quoted "normal" improvement for 4-5 being around 7lbs so Our Conor wouldn't even need to improve by the figures Morgans quoted for Zarkandar & Countrywide Flame to be on the premises in a champion hurdle

I know it's not quite as simple & as black & white as that but seeing as Our Conor wasn't in the slightest bit extended to win the Triumph only a fool would write off his chances. I can't imagine too many 10yos of the calibre of HF have tried win the champion but I don't think too many people will be arguing that the normal course of progression is a horse to improve for turning 10

yes he certainly won it extremely comfortably, but so did a lot of other horses in the past. 4 yr olds are very brittle, and the race, which is normally the toughest they have had at that stage of their career, can take a lot out of them, look most of the past winners. as i said, i obviously hope i am wrong and that he progress and realises his potential.the only triumph winner i can recall winning the triumph and going on to win the c.h since the 1980,s is kribensis (i will stand corrected on that), but even so poor stats.
    edit: oh and katchit

I dont know if he will. All we can say is that he is as good a juvenile as we have seen. Jair du Cochet was the best I had seen and he didnt get the chance to run at the festival.

did jair du cochet not run in the gold cup ?
sorry not the golp cup, he ran in the rsa and the stayers.

yeah, not as a juvenile. He beat Bilboa at Chepstow, about a furlong and a half in third. Bilboa went on to beat Azertyuiop by 20l at Aintree.

Lol SRFC's big mouth getting him in trouble again. Stop being so bullish and over the top with opinions and comments and you will be much better off.

Our Conor was obviously amazing but you have to wonder if he is just an exceptionally forward four year old. If he shows standard improvement from four to five the others should start running now.

Personally I think he is too short at 5/1 at this stage and would rather MTOY at 10s if I was having a bet this early.

The New One was also very impressive and it really was a vintage festival for novice hurdlers.
Lets hope they all get there safe and sound next year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,340 ✭✭✭sting60

We are all hoping Our Conor improves next season to be good enough to line up in the Champion Hurdle with a chance. The OR should be out on Thursday and what a job Phil Smith has in rating OC.If he uses Diakali who he beat 5L at Leopardstown and he beat him 22L at Cheltenham then god knows what new rating he will get.If he uses Far West 145 he beat him 15L then I presume his new rating will go up a minimum 10LB to 160.My own opinion is he will go up 16LB to 166 and I base this on Katchit going up 15LB for winning by 9L in winning as easy but not as impressivly.I believe the Champion Hurdle was the best in a good few years and Hurricane could go up from 172 to 177 as the horses he beat ran their best ever races.Rock on Ruby 170 up to 172 beaten 2 1/2 L and Countrywide Flame 158 to 169.What we found out about the CH is that Zarkandar does not have the gears to win a CH ,Binocular is long finished at this level and that there is a big race in Grandouet[Aintree].

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,775 ✭✭✭✭Slattsy

I think people can look too hard at ratings.

Just look at My Tent Or Yours, to use a current example. By all accounts with is rating after the Betfair he was a good thing, good enough to run in the CH
I priced up MTOY for the 2014 CHjust as a matter of interest and was told 4 to ****ing 1 :D

As impressive as OC was, you'd have to be wary of the horses he beat on the day and how good they were.

In saying this, i really hope OC isa bit special, but i'll refrain from any bandwagon jumping until next season.

I googled it found a thread on betfair says he will stay with Dessie. Seems the only link i can find. Will be a big shame for Bryan Cooper as i assume Mullins will be riding him.

I'm pretty surprised it took all of four days for the sale rumours to start. So I was just wondering if you have any source to your story.

Not saying it's definitely untrue but a post on boards and a thread on the betfair forum doesn't exactly make for a news story.

Shame if Cooper loses the ride

So now he's paid in excess of 2 million quid for Our Conor, Mount Benbulben, Old Kilcash & Golantilla

Add in the other horses he has in training and that's obscene money to be throwing around.

Good luck to him but wow, that's quite an outlay on national hunt geldings with very little residual value (not suggesting he's doing it for the money btw)

    From the racingpost.
Champion Hurdle favourite Our Conor bought by Barry Connell
Champion Hurdle favourite Our Conor has been bought by leading owner Barry Connell in the wake of his ultra-impressive Triumph Hurdle win last week for the Man About Town syndicate - full story in Wednesday's Racing Post.
    Connell 'delighted' with Conor purchase
Barry Connell, on buying Champion Hurdle favourite Our Conor. "I'm delighted to have the opportunity to buy him because I was so impressed with what he did in the Triumph."

I suppose if he goes on to win a champion hurdle Barry will feel he'd have been cheap at twice the price

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,286 ✭✭✭✭mdwexford

    Pity.

Surprised they sold him even it was for the million being mentioned.

If it was a million I am not surprised, as far as I know there is 6 in the syndicate and there is a husband and wife, so their household would get €360,000 from the sale and prizemoney along with all of their winnings.

**** you could clear your mortgage and buy two €30,000 horses.

1.4 Million I heard, the figure means nothing to Connell, its only a drop on the ocean to a man of his wealth, personally id rather give harry kirk 300 k to buy 3 horses from France with Willie Mullins,Anyone with ante post dockets for the CH all I can say is Good Luck because you'll need it with Danny Mullins riding it,He will find a way of getting it beaten very average jock.

    Dear god, moron

Texting and social media has bloody well ruined grammar. There should be ritual beatings for using "text speak" on Facebook. And ****ing hash tags, that should be a capital offence.

Can't stand the use of hash tags. ****ing dopes

I actually heard some dope use hash tags in speech a few weeks back.

2 gimps chatting about going on the beer that night. The other turns round and actually says "hash-tag, dying tomorrow"

They're lucky I wasn't carrying a blunt object. The time in Mountjoy would have been a fair swap
