I'm starting to believe that the Isle of Man is not the problem, it's the Lake District mountains...

Have a look at raintoday, the distance between the two strongest streamers so far is larger than should be the case if the IoM was having such an influence. The showers are forming in such a way that the heaviest clumps are in a similar pattern to the bits of showers that survive crossing Britain to the sea. And the Cumbrian mountains are stopping showers from crossing over them.

I was saying a few times now that the fact that SSTs are 5 degrees lower than in 2010 will mean the sea has less of an effect on the generation of showers compared to e.g. sun shining on land. And we're seeing that. The showers are reaching down to Offaly and beyond in a way that didn't really happen in 2010.

Perhaps we're using 2010 as a yardstick when it ought to be regarded as a unique event in a totally different time of year...

At the moment some heavy precip is coming off the UK. It has a very long track to reach us and I would expect this to beef up a lot

Very heavy snow now in Cork City!!!

You're not seriously calling that heavy?

The streamers are starting to bulk up now.

    http://www.met.ie/latest/rainfall_radar.asp

We have been hit in Limerick by a few snow showers in the past hour. There's no chance of lying snow here until we start to get back to darkness and low temps.

It'll be interesting to see how strong the streamers are from 7pm to 6am tomorrow morning. After this we have no chance down here!

Some of the streamers coming from the East coast of england are so large now they are making it across England and beefing up the Irish steamers!

A new 100mile long train is heading for mid wexford. Should hit land south of court own and go through enniscorthy or nearby
Expect a few hrs of snow in a 10 mile width for anyone under it.
    Its a proper streamer

Having seen Wicklow singled out in forecasts, fairly disappointing to see blue skys and green grass. That's the luck of the draw with streamers I suppose.

They haven't been beefing up so far to any great extent? The shower trains so far today look like they've started from what showers survived passing over northern England. We might be overestimating the IoM shadow. The lake district is probably more responsible for the north east coast getting an uneven amount of snow showers. If you look carefully at raintoday's radar, the precip coming from Britain now is mainly passing to the south of the Lake District.

If I'm right we should see Wicklow getting much heavier showers in the afternoon than Dublin will, even though Dublin is not yet in the shadow of the Isle of Mordor.

Radar suggests that's been happening all morning. There is maybe 20km of the east coast that shouldn't be affected by the Isle of Mordor but no precip is falling. The sea stretch is long enough yet compared to the places downwind of the UK showers making it out to sea, the likes of Skerries or Rush/Lusk are not really getting intense showers.

As soon as I posted it got a lot heavier. Not much is making it to the ground because of the wind, it's nearly like a snow tornado in my garden! Starting to stick a little bit though (not as much as around 8 this morning but still some!)

Got caught in a few heavy sleet showers on the way into Dun Laoghaire this morning, and the weather's been making the effort down here for a good while now :)

There have been plenty heavy showers here in D24 but not lying despite temp being 0. Can anyone explain this please?

I would have thought its too cold for sleet? Irish sea might be starting to explode, need a few more frames to be sure.

The showers are just not heavy enough...and...with the wind so strong and air so dry, rather than melting, the snow is almost evaporating.

First photo shows the big dark clouds making their way west bound over the Wicklow mountains. The others look over the garden in the direction of Brayhead (North facing).

That's the pattern folks. Snow, wind, snow, wind, dark, no snow, cold. In the same way that a piddly drizly wet day doesn't flood your garden this bean bag filler isn't going to coat the ground let alone give you enough for a snowman. Take it for what it is..a spring cold snap. No more no less. Rain Thursday, back to normal. It was a one bail of briquetts event!

    Sun is hot.

    Thank you Brick Tamland.

Crude but true. Look at the road surface temps in areas getting clearances; air temps 1/2, DPs -4/ -5, road surface temps anything between 10 and 17C, theres just too much energy around, March is counting badly against us.

It will return to being a very icy night tonight
