In the US atm, so I'm throwing these up a tad early than I usually do as I don't intend on being online much for the next week or two.

    Open Championship:

    1) Phil Mickelson @ 25/1
    2) Ernie Els @ 28/1
    3) Henrik Stenson @ 50/1
    4) Nicolas Colsaerts @ 66/2

    Might add Bjorn or Fowler.

3/4 shots back going into Sunday + 20/1 or greater odds + €5 e/w= PP account up several hundred euro.

    would people rather 33/1 6 places 30/1 7places or 28/1 8 places

the way to think about it is that you're sacrificing 14.7% of your potential winnings to get the extra 2 places.
so effectively you're getting 6/1 to finish exactly 7th or 8th, which doesnt seem great value imo.

(btw I know that doesnt factor in DH rules)

Not arguing the method. In my golf betting rut, I've considered doing that in the past. But posts like yours, you should back up with examples (screenshots) of you being up several hundred euro.

I was looking at the same thing, Bet Victor are 8 places but lower odds.
Most places are 7 except the usual Coral & Lads.

Do not back anybody until tomorrow when the Racing Post publish their supplement.

The companies that only offer 6 places (or in Coral case 5 )
go best price the main players so expect to see 11 or even 12's Tiger.
The likes of Stan James will price match in the morning from 10am.
Everybody wants to be the Black print in the outright odds so it's easier if you are only paying 5 or 6 places to go a bigger price the lower end so you know you aren't going to get many backing e/w.
It has happened most years for the last 8 at least.

Shortlist & Observations as follows after a lot of study:
McDowell 30/1 - could blow field apart or fall asunder (toss of a coin)
Snedeker 40/1 - Following this guy all year, Expectations
    Fowler 50/1 -
    Kuchar 45/1
    Dustin Johnson 45/1
    Branden Grace 66/1

    Jim furyk is a steal @ 90/1 - finished in Open top 10 6 times since 2002
Shane Lowry is worth a cheeky fiver @ 100/1
Hideki Matsuyama 175/1 - The best of the Asians

My pre season choices for the majors were,

    The Masters - Tiger

    The US Open - Snedeker

The Open - Tiger or Snedeker

    The PGA - Dustin Johnson

So no real scrutiny this week.

It's Snedeker at 40/1 and Tiger at 10/1 for me. I think both are real good value. I can't believe Snedeker is 40/1.

I'll probably pick 5 other and stick a score on them for interest.

    Manassero at 66/1

    Schwartzel at 40/1

    Zach Johnson at 90/1

    Furyk at 100/1

    Cabrera at 125/1

Nobody tipping Jason Day yet? I think he has a great chance, will probably be my only bet.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,642 ✭✭✭Deco99

Not tips by no means, just my picks. And last two majors I've had - Masters- Day (3rd), Snedeker (6th) and Keegan Bradley(nowhere). US OPEN - Day (3rd) Donald 8th Senden (18th) Mannesero (MC).

Westwood 33/1 e/w Ladbrokes 33/1 5/6 places (6 places may be an online offer) he's british and not terrible
Day 35/1 PP 7places - Third time lucky?
Cink 175/1 PP 7places - was practicing in Lahinch last week (thats the depth of my logic)

    Any opinions?

I've been backing Day for two full years at majors so may as well continue. 35/1

I'd be looking at Gmac too @25/1 will go one of two ways.

I keep coming back to Bubba Watson now @100/1 on PP too and can't shake it. Donaldson could do something too.

Also sneaky punts on Branden Grace @66/1 , Lowry @100/1 and Colsaerts @66/1

Not tips per se but just what my gut's shouting at me.

Thinking about Day but his relatively low experience on Links courses is a concern.

all the Aussies would have plenty of experience of playing links growing up.If you ever played golf down there you'd know what i mean.
It's very hard to rule any of the top50 players out,i think the vast majority have all the shots, sometimes when it's not blowing hard having a really high ball flight like Day can really help,he also has the ability to play knock down shots.

Betfred are going 8 places tomorrow only.

  • Registered Users Posts: 508 ✭✭✭Johnny86

Backed Maybin ew to be top Irish, 20-1 with betfair, 1/3 odds, place 2.
His form reads 8-5 at French and Scottish Open, both links.
Other Irish players hardly lighting things up at the mo apart from G Mac. He was 25-1 earlier today but only put the bet on now!

    Louis oostuizen@60/1
    Geoff oglvy@125/1
    Dufner 80/1
    Sneds 40/1

Will have 5e/w on all for interest

After about a month of no golf betting I'm back again for the Open. Going to go for the following :

    Sergio Garcia - 30/1
    Thomas Bjorn - 66/1
    Ernie Els - 28/1
    Graeme McDowell - 25/1
    Padraig Harrington - 70/1

    Novelty Outsider:
    Carl Pettersson - 200/1

I'll probably pick one American as well tomorrow.

    B Snedeker 45/1
    H Stenson 45/1
    J Donaldson 100/1
    R Sterne 110/1
    N Colsaerts 70/1
    Shane Lowry 100/1

    All small each way bets

Is it me or is the field numbers quite small, few lads I normally back are not there?

G mac, Kaymer and Manaserro as my main picks and of course the patriotic few quid on Lowry and Maybin.

In the states have gone for Summerhays, Byrd and Flores. Summerhays way over priced at 22/1 IMO, he has been in very good nick lately and although he seems to struggle to get over the line, I am banking on the weaker field here allowing him he's wobble and still prevail.
