Does anyone know about bbnd with o2 Globesurfer 111 (3) ?

Our bbnd with an o2 dongle is a joke but I've heard that this wi-fi device will give faster bbnd - anyone know if this true, or know anything at all about it ?

    Thanks

Well if the o2 globe surfer is just a wireless access point for their midband service I doubt you'd notice any improvement. Mobile broadband in general is quite poor, and if your a heavy user fixed line from the likes of UPC, Eircom etc. are an obvious choice ;):)

No, they are not a choice... we have absolutely no 'choice' here, it is a joke. The only dongle that will work at all is the o2 one and Eircom will not come out here. It's like living in the 3rd world ! It's an absolute joke !

:( I know the feeling. Unfortunately that Globesurfer thingy (from a quick Google) is just a wwan router, so your speeds won't be any better or higher than a dongle, unless the dongle is faulty :( .

A mobile Wifi hotspot (like the Globesurfer) may improve your connection, as you can place it it in a spot where reception is better. In addition, you can connect more than just one device.

But if I were you, I'd rather get a 3g router and install a proper outdoor antenna.

    Hi Torqay

That sounds like a possibility - do you think it will give me a better signal than this dongle ? Do you know any more about the Dipol router ? Can the antenna be placed outdoors or is it purely an indoor thing ?

    Thanks very much.

Not much of a difference. They both use an existing USB modem, so you'll need one with the option to connect an external aerial to improve the reception and outdoor works better than indoor.

You'll also find routers with a built-in 3G modem but they're rather expensive, all you need is a SIM card then. There are a few companies in Ireland specialising in such solutions.

If you're doing it yourself, keep a few things in mind: obviously, you want to keep the coax cable as short as possible. So you may need a USB extension cable to reach the router. For more than 5m you'll need a USB booster cable.
