I'm travelling to Dublin soon and I'm staying on Cardif Lane and was wondering which of the two stations are more convenient or does it really matter at all?

I think it depends on where your travelling from or too to be honest. They both serve different routes and are connected via the luas

Connolly would be well within walking distance,

Trains from Cork go to Heuston and Cardiff Lane is over the Liffey from Connolly!

If your train terminates at Heuston, get the Luas towards The Point and get off at NCI. Go across the square (Mayor Square) towards the Liffey, turn left and walk across the Samuel Beckett Bridge. Then turn left and Cardiff Lane is on the right. Heuston to NCI on the LUAS is about 15-20 mins and the walk over is about 10 mins

The train stops at both stations so just wondering which is best to get off at. Took a look on google maps but wasn't sure about luas/taxis from the station to the hotel. Sounds like Connolly might be best, thanks

Is this an extra special train? While trams and bus route 90 serve both stations, no ordinary train does.

However, if you do have a ticket to Connolly, you should be able to use the same ticket to get to Pearse. It is a slightly shorter walk if you have luggage. http://maps.google.ie/maps?saddr=Pearse+Station,+Dublin&daddr=Cardiff+Lane,+Dublin&hl=en&ll=53.345543,-6.244118&spn=0.006559,0.021136&sll=53.342393,-6.245643&sspn=0.006559,0.021136&geocode=FV_1LQMddaOg_ylTiOiokQ5nSDFSelgM0IIGfw%3BFQ_7LQMdTMag_ylr6OPJkg5nSDGmvdoufBxXvA&dirflg=w&mra=ltm&t=m&z=16

No it doesn't. It stops at Heuston only. Just get a taxi from there to your hotel.

From Heuston you could get the Red Line to Mayor Square and walk over. Think a one way ticket is about €2.

    Interesting.

In order for a train to serve both Heuston and Connolly in that order, it would need to proceed into Heuston in the normal manner and then reverse back out until it clears the set of points for the branch towards the Phoenix Park tunnel. It would then need to move forwards again and proceed through the tunnel (which isn't used for scheduled passenger services) before joining the Sligo line into Connolly.

I would hazard a guess that anyone getting off at Heuston on such a journey and completing it by tram would arrive in Connolly before the train they just got off.

The tunnel is used on rare occasions by GAA specials for Croke Park, but trains go direct to Connolly on such services without calling at Heuston.

The only other way it was possible to get from Heuston to Connolly by rail until recently was via Waterford and Rosslare.

So the tram and perhaps even the No90 bus was still a quicker option. :)

Not true, the train could just stop at the lovely Platform 10 instead of going all the way into Heuston.

Good point. I forgot about Platform 10.

Thats the new(ish) one out near Cherry Orchard station isn't it? ;)

One could be forgiven for assuming Irish Rail have forgotten about it too !

What train is it anyway? Would love to go through the Phoneix Park tunnel for a look.

There is no regularly scheduled service. As mentioned, some GAA specials go through the tunnel.

But is there a set of points at the entrance to the tunnel to allow the train move back onto the correct track? I don't think there is so it may rule it out. Anyway there is no special services planned to Dublin from Cork over the next while.

For some reason this has being stopped with 2 or 3 years, no GAA specials have operated to Connolly since then. I think it was a Kilkenny/Waterford specials that operated to Connolly last. Don't know why they stopped it.
