Music Practical Nightmare

Hey guys I have a big problem getting ready for the practical coming up in April, which is only a few weeks away now. There is no music teacher so I decided to take music outside school but I have found it to be completely useless. The pieces my teacher has given me are either too hard or the polar opposite of too easy. He will not listen to any suggestions I make and it has gotten to the stage that I'm just not bothering to go to class anymore. I am really worried about what to do so any suggestions on good songs for electric bass would be great. I am also thinking of use guitar pro files on my laptop on the day rather than printing off pages, just wondering if that is acceptable? Thanks a million for any help anyone can give. :)

Wet Sand by Red Hot Chilli Peppers is a beautiful song on bass, it's my favourite to play!

Basically any RHCP song is bound to have an amazing baseline!
Good luck with it all :)

Lol true although the examiner would probably think I am taking the piss if I just did 6 RHCP songs, damn you leaving cert diversity rules. :(

You could do something funky like Billie Jean!

It is a great song but really repetitive, would sound boring without Michael's vocals just using a backing track. Thanks for the suggestion though :).

For great bass lines, look at Abba. I kid you not, though they can be a bit complicated.
Look especially at the Rutger Gunnarsson lines.

Thanks Spurious, never noticed how good the bass lines are in those songs. Although it warps my mind a little to say I like ABBA songs lol thanks a lot though :) will see if I can find some decent backing tracks for a few of them to try out.

Not really an expert on bass but perhaps The Police? The reason I say them is because I'm a drummer and they have some pretty impressive drum parts, and as bass is usually linked with drums they might be good for that too. I did a Sting song for my own practical last year on drums and it went down a storm :)

Absolutely fantastic bassline in this underrated gem of Queen's, it's not rock, so it'll give a bit of variety to your performance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHhdVPLN-Aw

Also this Jethro Tull one wouldn't go amiss either: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2RNe2jwHE0

Best of luck with it! :)

I'm backing this up, a lot of Queen songs have amazingly melodic bass lines... not to mention the more catchy and funk influenced songs, eg. Another One Bites The Dust :)

Oh god the Millionaire Waltz, I tried that song for about 3 weeks straight a few months ago and just couldn't get it right, Deacon is an incredible bass player I can't touch that kind of stuff lol, the Jethro Tull song is very cool though thanks for that one :) only ever really listened to Thick as a Brick by them.
