Cha has made it quite clear he has no interest and no intension of playing for Kilkenny again. Reading the interview given by him to the media this week Kilkenny are far better off without him near the panel.

Have to agree with u there savannahkat. Kk hurling dont need that kind of attitude. U know what they say about one bad apple Would be great if he eased off with the media interviews too. His day is gone and it was his own doing.

So a player who won minor, under 21 and Senior All Irelands is a bad apple. Cha always showed an exemplary attitude on the pitch. He was asked a question following on from a high profile club match and answered it truthfully. He is not exactly running to the tabloids at every opportunity.

Joey Holden is a decent hurler and not as good as Tommy.

The thing is though, Tommy's legs were clearly gone this year, and the way we were playing there was a lot of movement, so Buckley and Padraig Walsh were the right choices at wing-back, with Holden replacing Padraig Walsh when we was injured. And he even struggled under the high ball this year, against Tannion especially in Tullamore.

And lads who were going on about Tommy having a falling out with Cody, especially the rumour it was over Padraig not starting the drawn game, are talking out their a**e. Padraig had a bad dose of the flu before the Limerick game and had not recovered to be fully fit to start.
Considering one of the main reasons we crashed out to Cork last year was starting men who were not 100% (Shefflin and Buckley), it was a good call.

Thanks Tommy for all the great memories you will be sorely missed by all true hurling fans .

    David Herity has retired.

No major loss there considering calibre of Eoin Murphy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,474 ✭✭✭deadybai

Best of luck to him. Great servant to Kilkenny since 2008. Hope everything goes well for him at club level.

Who is next in line for the goalkeeper position now?

Stephen Murphy from O Loughlins would be my pick

Wow, very poor attitude to have towards an amateur player who doubtless made many sacrifices over the years to represent his county. Thankfully from my experience your attitude wouldn't be commonplace amongst KK hurling supporters.

Best of luck to him in retirement, 5 all Ireland's is nothing to be sniffed at, KK keepers over the years often didn't get the credit they deserved due to the often outstanding full back line in front of them

Would not consider you a true Kilkenny hurling fan with that type of comment.

He was/still is a good keeper & Kilkenny will be doing well to have such a good sub goalie next year.

David was a very popular member of the panel too, lads like him and Tommy can really boost the morale and atmosphere in a team. David also gave a lot to Kilkenny football over the years and was actually one of the few Kilkenny lads that didn't look out of place in underage inter county games.

Richie Reid, TJ`s brother was third choice on the panel this year

He will have no bother slotting in 2nd choice to replace Herity. Reid is a great keeper

And what happens if the unthinkable occurs and Eoin Murphy gets injured.......

oh hold on, that actually happened during the summer.....

Herity stepped in then and did a good job. We were lucky to have him.

+1. Is there any likelihood of Murphy moving out the field? I haven't seen a lot of him out the field but the little I have has impressed me.
I also like the look of Phelan from Clara. Not sure if he has ever gotten any runs with county though.

Sorry. Post sounded harsher than was meant to be. Just meant his retirement will be easily absorbed as Murphy and Reid are capable goalies. Not a slur on Herity at all

where has Dylan Walsh gone to the minor keeper in the 2010 minor all ireland final win over clare wasn't to bad.

Fine keeper Herity, unlucky to be around at a time when we had PJ who had been waiting for his chance for a long time and the eoin came along, David couldn't have done much more, played well when called on and must have been disappointed to be dropped for the final!

Astonishingly, despite the retirements of Tommy and David, there is still 100 all Ireland medals within the squad. What a golden generation.

Word coming out that Taggy has retired. Not shocked by this one if true but again agreat servant to the county, an often underrated player because he was among so many great forwards. His awkward grip probably meant he didn't look as stylish too, but he was a serious player. And nobody will ever forget 2006 when he scored 1-3 on the way to one of the rare kk all Irelands that was a real upset.

Edit: and Brian Hogan too! Jesus an era is really closing, none of these are shocks but all coming at once is a punch in the gut I'm sure! Was in school with Hogan and he was the nicest lad you'd meet, no airs, but a real determination to succeed and turn himself into the player he became. Dunno when he was first starting out against wexford the time we were bet did anyone think he'd eventually become such a key player for us, but that he did, at one if the hardest positions on the field to nail down your place. Best off luck to them both.

Although Tommy, Brian, David and Aidan were on the bench this year they will be sorely missed in the dressing room. I expect Henry to follow suit and possibly Jackie. The reason why I say Jackie is because he soldiered with Tommy and Brian from his days wi Kierans and just might find it too strange to continue on. If Brian Cody can win the All Ireland next year it'll be his greatest achievement

  • Registered Users Posts: 230 ✭✭homeofhurling

dropping like flys now but not shocked about the players who have called it a day, Don't think Jackie will call it a day he hurl great last year the others were looking at been on the bench again in 2015 and that made their minds up for them. wont be Codys great achievement Mullinr2 if they won next year as none of the players that have gone hurl in the final, Shefflian will be the next one to go i feel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,474 ✭✭✭deadybai

Jaysus 4 players is a huge blow. Even though they didnt play for much of the year they would have made the training sessions a lot more competitive. Its up to the current lads to step up and be real leaders for the new men coming in.
Brian Hogan will probably go down as one of the most underrated centre-backs of all-time in my opinion. He should get more credit than he gets. Thought loosing him before the 2010 final was a bigger blow then losing Henry.
Aidian Fogarthy is another one who his underratted. Hard to believe he doesnt have an All-Star. Must be the only player who consistently played through Kilkenny greatest era who hasnt won one.
Best of Luck to both and thanks for great years of service.

Thanks to David, Taggy and Brian Hogan, all great servants who gave us great days. Cody will need a few faces and a lot of experience is leaving the panel but TJ and Richie Hogan have stood up and shown leadership on this new team which was the biggest plus, right down to both standing on the line for penalties.

The big thing will be when he looks at the bench there won't be massive experience but I'm sure Cody will unearth plenty of talent and that the remainder of the panel will work hard to fill the gaps.

Henry has every right to make us wait but there is an air of inevitability about his retirement. Feels like an end of an era in some ways but to Codys great credit the panel is in good shape.

Match report form the 2006 final. My favourite Kilkenny Line-Up. Look at that team!

We won that day without JJ as well

  • Registered Users Posts: 364 ✭✭unrealtime

If Henry wins club final in March, he'll be the fittest at that time in years and may by then have shown rare form in the club games. If so, why would he not stay as he would then be worth his place for the league. He is still a very young man. Those retiring now are generally young. I am surprised that Hogan is going - he has a lot to offer still - if he stayed fit.

Aidan Fogarty surely holds a record for most AI medals without an All Star.

Genuinely couldn't believe to hear he has eight.

Gutted hearing about these lads going, end of an era, if Henry went it would be too much, wonder if a song would persuade him (to the tune of Janet Mac im nearly forty)

[D] Well there is a man we call King (g)Henry
He comes[D] from a place called Bally[A] Hale
Some say(D] that he can walk on G] water
And [A] he drinks his tae from the holy (D) grail

He was born in a black and Amber Jersey
He was holding a Hurley and a ball
He has ten Celtic crosses on his dresser (soon be eleven)
And all stars, sure they hang on every wall!

CHORUS: So Henry play until you're forty.
    You're looking fitter every day
You'll be going for eleven very shortly,
And how we long for you to stay

Well there have been some brilliant hurlers
Ring and DJ and John Doyle
If you mixed them all together, you'd get Henry
For skill and toughness and for style

For fifteen long years he's been our leader
For Henry it's all about the team
For all the other counties he's a nightmare
But for us in Kilkenny he's a dream

CHORUS: Oh Henry play until you're
Forty you're looking fitter every day day
You'll be picking up your tenth one very shortly,
And how we long for you to stay

We can't afford to lose another legend
The body count this month is up to four
Well Henry's had more war wounds than Chuck Norris
But still each year he's back for more

Now this has been our golden generation
With JJ, Tommy and the King
This team has mesmerised the nation
And they'll keep it going if you sing -

CHORUS: Oh Henry play until you're
Forty you're looking fitter every day day
You'll be picking up your eleventh very shortly
And how we long for you to stay tenth one very shortly
And how we long for you to stay

You see Henry, now age is just a number
It doesn't matter, you've still got the class
We know you'll be coming back next season
And you'll be ready to kick Tipperary's asssssk me for another chorus!

CHORUS: Oh Henry play until you're
Forty you're looking fitter every day day
You'll be picking up your eleventh very shortly
And how we long for you to stay tenth one very shortly
And how we long for you to stay!
So please Mr Cody make him stay!

In truth Brian will be a huge loss yet it was inevitable. Tommy, Brian, Taggy and Davd gone and it still is 50/50 with Henry though I do not think that Brian Cody will allow Henry the luxury of waiting until March 17th to make up his mind if Ballyhale reach the club final. In truth none of the retirees started or played any part in the replay game which would indicate that we have already got their replacements in place. It may be true for three of the 4 but not for Brian. Joyce was selected for a one off marking job which worked but I do not see him as a permanent center back. I do not know of any one putting their hand up so we are going have to do a bit of a county wide search and if that fails then Cillian Buckley it has to be. Great memories from great players to live on for a few months.

Slightly off topic lads, but how did Brian and Keith Hogan end up hurling with 2 different clubs?

  • Registered Users Posts: 119 ✭✭Fort Stranger

On a serious note this has to happen one week after AI club final - testimonial in the park, current team against :

    (All still fairly fit)
    Herity
    Kav Hickey Dalton
    Tommy Brian Tenno
    Cha Paddy Hogan
    Rice Henry Eddie B
    Taggy Gorta Willie O Dwyer

subs McGarry, Hartley, Ryall, Lyng, Mulhall, Matt Ruth, Damien Fogarty, Eoin Reid, John Meagher

That's a nice idea but will never happen. The county team always has to look to the future. If it was to happen id suggest a ex Kieran's team against the team picked above. Still don't think it would work tho.

I think it would be great as a fundraiser for a local charity and a day of celebration and a chance to thank some of the lads whose career didn't end on the high they deserved?

    From Hoganstand

Brian Cody has paid a glowing tribute to his recently-retired gladiator Tommy Walsh.

Under Cody's watch, Walsh helped himself to nine All-Irelands, nine successive All Stars, nine Leinster championships and seven national hurling league crowns.

"Tommy Walsh epitomises hurling. I always felt that," Cody states in The Kilkenny People. "He is what hurling is meant to be, especially Kilkenny hurling and the way you would want the game to be.

"He was outstanding. He had everything and he produced it every day he went out. He adorned the jersey completely.

"There is just so much about him. He was completely modest and utterly confident on the field and completely composed on the ball.

"His ability to win ball in the sky was amazing, phenomenal. As a leader he was unsurpassed.
